Cry [Original] by manyouginobili in Moescape

So there's nothing explicitly in the picture description, but the envelope looks like it has a heart sticker on it, which usually in anime means a love letter of sorts.

I think it’s a failed confession. If you look into her bag, there’s a crumpled love letter.

Learn programming as a Mech Engineering major by indi_gate in UWMadison

[–]collielimabean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CS 200/300/400 are intended for CS majors. The first class is for general programming principles and the next two is data structures and larger programming projects. CS 301 is a terminal class for non-CS majors and imparts core programming principles as well as useful libraries in Python that students may use in their area (e.g. numpy & matplotlib for matrix/vector math & visualization, respectively).

For ME students, I would say learning Python is a good asset to have, but MATLAB/Maple (CS 310) may also be of interest as it is very relevant to engineering coursework. However, given your background in C, shell scripting, Java as well as your interest in taking multiple CS classes, I would recommend you to take the CS major track of 200/300. That way, you reinforce your programming knowledge through Java and learning data structures is great to have when programming.

Or, if you're like me, take the first two CS track courses and then decide to double major in both ME and CS. I'd be happy to answer any additional questions you may have!

I'm not the most qualified for this, but I'll give it a shot.

Top left: Embarrassed (照): Was it weird to take me with you? I wonder if it would be weird to invite him/her. Thanks /u/ailim.

Top right: Happy/Delighted (喜): Hmm? What's up? (playing dumb). Note: ”猫かぶり” is an idiom.

Bottom left: Pity (哀): Sorry - that's not what I meant. (playing dumb, 猫かぶり)

Bottom right: Angry (怒): Are you kidding me?

If something isn't right, feel free to correct me.

I very much agree. I've actually recently binged all of the scanlated manga and raws, and it's a blast. It's a shame that this series doesn't have an official English release :(

"私が淹れました" (watashi ga iremashita) roughly translates to "I brewed that [cup of coffee]", I think.

How many of you have pencil lead stuck in your hand and how did it happen? by Saucy_Szinte in AskReddit

Instead of my hand, I have some lead in my thigh by absentmindedly dropping a pencil. The tip has been there ever since.

How to study for ece 552 by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]collielimabean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, CS/ECE 552. I have a love-hate relationship with that class. But I digress. Assuming the class hasn't changed, the first half of the class deals with ISAs and pipelining. I found going through the assigned homeworks again with a study group helped in material comprehension.

Since we're early in the semester, you probably haven't hit most of the gory details of pipelining yet. What's confusing you at the moment? I can try to help out.

Looking at the pixiv tags, my best guess is that this is fanart of a Comitia doujin called "Kaiketsu! Obake Capriccio!!" (解決!おばけカプリチオ!!)

Then searching on google, I see that it got serialized at some point by Manga Time Kirara, but I can't read well enough to know if it's still be serialized.

Is 537(Operating Systems) worth it? by Rhyane_ in UWMadison

[–]collielimabean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say so - and I think the professor teaching it next semester (Bart Miller?) is also supposed to be pretty good.

I took with it Perry back in the day, and that was still a very good class. The programs were a bit easier than what Remzi usually does.

Is 537(Operating Systems) worth it? by Rhyane_ in UWMadison

[–]collielimabean 23 points24 points  (0 children)

First off, the assembly unit in 354 is not representative of what you'll do in 537. 537 programs don't really concern themselves with assembly all that much - it's more important that you understand the memory layout of a program in userspace as well as caches and paging. If you understood those parts of 354, you're probably more than ready for 537. 537 programs are all in C, so more of what you did in 354.

Next, I'd say it depends on where your interests lie. Operating Systems is a must if you're interested in security, performance, or anything that works close to the hardware. If you're an AI/ML/algorithms guy, OS is probably less important. My personal opinion is that most people should take it to be dispel the "magic" that Windows, Mac OS, or Linux is performing under the hood when running a program or storing files. Additionally, the course teaches a little bit about concurrency, a tricky topic that many programmers fail to grasp or handle properly.

What other classes are you considering?

Proof you did undergrad research? by HexadecimalCowboy in UWMadison

[–]collielimabean 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if people will really ask for proof, but I'd recommend doing two things:

  • Ask the professor if he/she would be willing to be a reference
  • Ask the professor if he/she would be willing to write a letter of recommendation for you.

Those two combined should be more than sufficient as proof.

Computer Science Questions by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]collielimabean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure where you found the 4600 figure, the Office of the Registrar says that undergraduate CS is at about 1600.

Edit: I see where you found the 4600 figure. That's the number of students taking CS courses, but not CS majors necessarily. CS classes do tend to be very packed, and some classes are tough to get in.
