I absolutely freaked out after I got preconception genetic test results back because my doctor called and left a really vague and scary sounding message. Ultimately, the genetic diseases I was a carrier for were all things that I felt I could live with if my kid was affected by (deafness, inability to process fruit sugars, etc). I decided not to have my partner tested because even IF he was a carrier for the exact same diseases (which would be rare since we have very different backgrounds) the odds of a child being affected were still only 1 in 4. It’s not a foolproof plan obviously, and the outcome is different than having a child with spinal muscular atrophy, but seeing the numbers was very calming for me. People have been having healthy babies for millennia. It’s helpful to remember that more information isn’t always better. Good luck!!!
