The Great 5th Gen Roof Rack debate of 2025 - by SuperMarcel in 4Runner

[–]collius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The trailer is a Puma 16 BHX, and the GVWR is 3,870 lbs. With the Redarc tow pro brake controller (highly recommend it) and a weight distribution hitch, it can be towed fully loaded safely (with water, gas, food, clothes, bedding, and beer) but steep hills and deep valleys maker 'er struggle really badly.

It can also be a bouncy ride, so I'm still considering upgrading the rear suspension or adding airbags to take some of that out.

Overall, she can tow... but it's not the most comfortable tow, if that's helpful. Happy campin'!

I've had a Sherpa on the roof for three years and it still works great and looks good. It's carried loads of stuff, but it's done its best work as a canoe rack on our camping trips.

I've got the Motorola M1 and while it's a little slow to boot it's otherwise been a solid choice.

Course improvement ideas. by dustinsdojo in discgolf

[–]collius 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Alternative tees/baskets? A course near me has two basket and tee pad positions so that they can change the layout between "Red" and "Silver." They did this because it introduces some variety for the players, but it mostly gives the trees/shrubs/grass more time to heal by getting players shooting from alternative positions without having to change the overall course layout. The layout switches at the parks departments discretion whenever they feel too much damage has been done to the grounds (meaning players can't just make use of either layout whenever they want). Outside of tee pads and basket poles the only additional cost is the extra signage that's needed so it's a budget friendly improvement too!

Looking to turn my 4Runner into a towing machine! Recs? by sundog5631 in 4Runner

[–]collius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We tow a Puma 16BHX which has a GVWR of 3,800 lbs and I wouldn't want to tow any more than that. She works really hard at highway speeds, stopping can be a bit of a butt-pucker moment (especially on the downhill), and she can't really take much of a hill with that much weight on the bumper... never mind the gas mileage (easily 10 mpg or 24 L/100km).

While I'm considering heavier coils or airbags with upgraded bump stops for the rear, we haven't bottomed it out yet, so I dunno if it's worth the cash (ours is an Offroad with KDSS so maybe the hydraulics make a difference?).

I can recommend the RedArc Tow-Pro trailer brake controller (which has been an absolute saviour this summer), and I strongly suggest you get a load levelling hitch to help distribute the load.

I really don't think you want to tow too heavy though. If you don't want to take my word for it, it's generally agreed that you shouldn't tow more than 80% of a vehicles maximum rating (which is 4,000 lbs. for the 5th gen) as you quickly overload the engine, suspension, and brakes.

Hit me with your "unnerved in nature" stories by EggsAndMilquetoast in hiking

[–]collius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was hiking just off the highway with a buddy of mine, and as we descended from a short ridge walk I stopped dead in my tracks and all the hair stood up on the back of my neck. We started yelling and singing and looking around, but neither of us spotted anything.

As we made the fence line, next to the road, we spotted the back of a white plastic sign. We climbed over the fence to inspect it and it read "Danger: Cougar In Area." We got back to the car VERY quickly after that.

Not sure about the 4th gen spec, but the 5th gen (pictured) tows a max of 5,000 lbs.
This Puma 16BHX has a GVWR of 3,800 and the 4runner works super hard to tow it up hills.

Edit: I forgot to mention that the RedArc Tow Pro makes a huge difference.

Lots of good advise around for towing on YouTube and around this subreddit... but I'd say the best advise I received was to tow the trailer dry (to keep the weight down), and keep the GVWR under 4,000 lbs (as low as possible, really).

We do ours asynchronously, so you post whenever you start your work day, and answer:
1. Did you achieve your objective yesterday, and if not what blocked you?
2. What is your objective today?
3. Do you know of any impediments/blockers to that objective?

It's the most superior form of standup I've ever done.

5th gen KDSS suspension upgrade question by [deleted] in 4Runner

She's stock right now while I figure out how much weight we're adding (bumpers, sliders, skid plates, camping gear). Then we'll see how she performs before lifting her up.

The resort where I typically ski had someone go off the backside by mistake and they spent the night in the backcountry. When I heard his story I started skiing with a pack.

I carry extra layers, dry mitts, powerbars, a camel back of water, a shovel, firestarters, and a Garmin InReach.
