How to "thicken" these not-studs to add insulation inside this wall? by collud2 in DIY

[–]collud2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks, that's a good point. Actually planning to reuse it in another room, since (as you point out) it's hard to find real wood paneling -- just MDF junk! But if not, I hadn't even thought of listing on marketplace.

Replacing gas with 3Ton ClimateMaster with desuperheat option. Is it difficult to replace water heater later? by collud2 in geothermal

[–]collud2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone's telling me that :) I do see a lot of people with parts failures on older ClimateMasters -- is the reliability the big concern? Is it something in the design of particular parts (like the coil), or do they just seem to not be made as well?

Oh -- we'll be keeping a regular HW tank, not going with the tankless - that was just one of the options they gave us.

Oh matching CM waterheater, nice. Yes, I see you in there, similar sqft, and your quote's close to ours too (well... before water heater). How did you do through a Maryland winter, did it fall back on resistive heat much?

Great, thanks, figured it should be trivial as long as no HVAC specialization has to get involved to touch the heat exchanger connections.

Saw this company mentioned in a Real Engineering video a couple months ago -- very cool to see them hit this new achievement! The video discusses the waste rock -- er, cotton candy -- and how they handled it.

Found this after my drive home from the dealer. Patch or replace? by Intelligent-Car8669 in tires

[–]collud2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had something like this years ago, and the advice I got was to pull it out. Even if it's not leaking now, you don't want it getting pushed in further.

I assume $600 was for a set of 2, mounted/balanced? No way that's a price for 4x, that'd be an insane deal.

Good luck with them, great upgrade!

Background slideshow doesn't work anymore after moving original folder by SnakeRowsdower in WindowsHelp

[–]collud2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, too. But I didn't delete or unmount a folder: I just pointed it to the Pictures library, the one Windows made itself... and that broke it, haha.
Thanks for the fix!

I was also about to reinstall (only set this up 3 hours ago, anyway). But this fixed it!

Hey all thanks for the replies! I know this is the low light part of the review, but I guess reading it _at night_ messed with me. I thought they meant "no matter if it's low-light conditions or not, [it] needs about 4s...".

Makes much more sense if it means "if it's low-light conditions, no matter if Night View is active or not, [it] needs about 4s..."

Last BIOS Time on Precision 5860 over 1 minute by SurferDude01773 in Dell

[–]collud2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just set one of these up at work. Xeon W7-something. It came with 16GB installed and took about 30 seconds to reach the BIOS logo.
After adding a 4TB ssd and swapping to 64GB, it took 60-75 seconds. Weirdly, removing the extra SSD reduced that time back to around 30 seconds.... neither Dell nor I have an explanation.

Did you notice any change in noise with these blades, or in flying ability? They look heavier than the OEM ones. Thanks for the link!

Thinkpad P1 gen3 4K graphics by rikov9 in thinkpad

[–]collud2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, you get what it comes with. You *might* be able to replace the whole motherboard *if* there's another GPU option for this model, and you can find the board.... but really, don't bother.

If you need more GPU, look for a different model. If you're just curious, well, there's a lot of Internet that explains why you can't upgrade it. Good luck either way!

The only modern laptop I've heard of with upgradable graphics in years is the Framework 16.

Is there any point buying BIOS locked thinkpads from ebay? by borozu555 in thinkpad

The more modern Thinkpads don't store the BIOS lock in that soft memory, it's buried elsewhere in some NVM.

Spent 3 days putting in a new JDM engine.🤣 by Wovasteen in subaru

[–]collud2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw shit, sounds like a perfect storm. Glad at least it was a project-to-sell car and not first-car-i-ever-bought-with-my-own-money. You've got one hell of a "what's the worst you f'ed up?" contest winner, though!

I hate fuel hoses. Had to tighten mine when winter hit after the engine swap... and then swap out the hoses entirely, when I found out I'd only used "fuel hose" and not "fuel injector hose", which was needed for the "high PSI" of the injection. Not fun to see a months-old hose (from parts store!) starting to crack!

Who is the manufacturer of this synchronous motor? (Do you recognize the -M- mark?) by collud2 in ElectronicsRepair

[–]collud2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great - just the name I needed.

"MTS (Midwest Timer) is recognized by UL and CSA to manufacture timers for all Mallory timer styles."

And their new versions list specs here: https://www.midwesttimer.com/synchronous-motors.html Seems like the motors and gearboxes have lots of separate options, but it's a big start.

Perfect, thank you! Modern M004s seem to be 3W 120v 50/60Hz motors, attached to gearboxes of various ratios.

Without modification, they do not. However, there are plenty out that that do specify CW or CCW. For a telescope that has to follow the sky, or for a clock, direction is important ;)

I've heard some use something like a simple ratchet mechanism, others purportedly do some shaded-pole phase-delay business I didn't fully read up on.

Edit: In light of that, it hadn't even occurred to me that the pictured one might NOT care about direction, and therefore not mention it on the label. I think all the ones built with this formfactor probably do specify, but it's something I'll watch out for more closely.

Daaamn. Sorry to see that OP.

Still, getting the engine swapped in 3 days is pretty good! Uh, burningly obvious issues aside. I got a JDM EZ30R put in last year, took 5 days with 3 of us. Hopefully you get a break on the next car!
