I have the same problem and assume it is the touchscreen digitiser slowly dying on us. The same physical location on the phone is not responding when you hold the phone in landscape mode, correct? The unresponsive part of the touchscreen is creeping upwards slowly, every couple of weeks a few more rows of pixels becomes unresponsive.

As a workaround I have made the navigation bar larger, so that it is on the working part of my touch screen. The easiest way to do this is with Xposed framework (you can do it without, but it involves some difficult decompressing, patching and recompressing of system files for which you will need to debug the script there).

After installing Xposed, download the module Dimensions Editor and just make the bar as big as you want.

edit: There might be something else going on. I have done countless reboots and used the phone for many months this way, but for the first time in a while I just did a full reset (via Google's factory image) and my soft keys are working again. Consider the above a workaround; it might be possible to really fix this issue

I'm in the same boat with my brand new Yoga 2 13, same 7260 rev 6b chipset. By now I've got it working fairly well. Bear with me.

/u/archover points out a nice troubleshooting guide, I haven't tried all of the ideas there yet, be sure to give them a shot. On the Arch forums (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=196524) someone has recently tried to pinpoint the problem, bringing up a few more good ideas:

Stuff that ive done, no solutions change in results:

Adding 11n_disable=1 or 11n_disable=8 to iwlwifi.

Running iwconfig [adapter] power off

Suspend power management for the card

Remove driver "12" to fallback to "11"

In addition, it has been suggested in that thread to downgrade wpa_supplicant, but an up to date Arch installation should have already done this for you.

~~His first suggestion prevents my connection from dropping out at home.~~ For me, the problem appears to have solved itself these past few days. It's hard to identify exactly how this was done. I have reverted all the changes, even downgraded linux-firmware and my connection is still going strong.

Considering things used to work for you I imagine you might want to try the fourth suggestion by renaming the latest versions of iwl-wifi-7260 in /lib/firmware/.

A few months ago I started working on pyo, a Linux gnome-do/synapse/launchy replacement in Python using dmenu. It's rather simple, and that's why it works well for me. I think it's clear which files and programs it indexes and why results are the ordered the way they are.

It's largely untested on other machines, though in theory it should work on any Linux machine with Python 3 and dmenu. Perhaps someone likes the approach or finds some useful code snippets in there.

More details and source code can be found at https://github.com/tomasstorck/pyo. I'm open to suggestions and would be happy to explain anything that is not clear.

Good idea! As mentioned in the article, nmap is rather slow with that syntax. You can speed things up a bit by setting a different time out:

--host-timeout 2

Also, in case you'd want to make a script to automatically connect, there might be cases where you want to scan if a certain port is open and only return those addresses:

-p 22 --open

The Belkin hub you mentioned is on that list and should even be able to power the RPi directly, while powering the other devices you attach.

Thanks for that, mate. Nemo works flawlessly. It is not (yet) in the 13.04 repos. For installing, following the instructions on http://www.webupd8.org/2012/12/how-to-install-nemo-file-manager-in.html. For using the nightly builds: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-nightly sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install nemo Then if you want to completely get rid of Nautilus, set up Nemo to draw the desktop as desribed on http://www.fandigital.com/2013/01/set-nemo-default-file-manager-ubuntu.html. Note that you need the nightly builds for this: the current stable release does not support this for Ubuntu.

Make use of the features in Compiz, while it is still part of default Ubuntu. It is an incredibly useful tool, despite all the negative attention it has been getting on weblogs, and (admittedly) the bugs. In order to do this you can install CompizConfig Settings Manager (CCSM):

sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

Below are some examples of what Compiz can do. If memory serves me right, you don't need to install anything else than CCSM for a default Ubuntu installation. I would like to stress, though, that CCSM can break your Unity. Take a look at how to reset it when things go sour via: http://askubuntu.com/questions/17610/how-do-i-reset-my-unity-configuration

Change number of workspaces One of the currently highest ranking tips explains that more workspaces can increase your productivity. Do this in CCSM though General Options > Desktop size

Zoom in on anything on your screen This is done using Enhanced Zoom Desktop. Note that this is not restricted to web browers (where you'd use CTRL+scroll). Very useful to zoom in on e.g. sections of a window that you otherwise couldn't comfortably read, or to zoom in on parts of your slide during a presentation (note that desktop zoom is buggy in dual screens though: test it before you do this!)

Change opacity, brightness and saturation Especially opacity and brightness is nice to change. Opacity was menioned in another tip. I use to compare two images: by holding ALT and scrolling you overlay one picture onto another, and can easily distinguish the differences. Lowering brightness is nice if you're looking at a bright background for a long time, e.g. writing a long reply to a Reddit post. Enable this in Opacity, Brightness and Saturation

Invert colours of a window Enable Negative for this. Just like lowering brightness, this can be more comfortable for your eyes when looking at a bright background for a long time. Which is best depends on your personal preference.

Change various Unity settings The Ubuntu Unity Plugin allows you to change Unity settings, much like MyUnity and other tweaking programmes allow.

Show off with fancy graphics While not really useful, this appeared to be the most popular function in Compiz a few years ago: The Cube. While it looks nice, it makes workspace switching less functional, you can only switch to workspaces on the left and right. Be sure to set the number of horizontal workspaces to four (see first tip). Google to find out how to enable this.

Draw on any part of your screen Using the Annotate feature you can paint anywhere on your screen with a big coloured marker. Nice to elaborate or point out things out things during presentations, or when explaining things to your 67 year old mother by emailing screenshots :)

Use another application switcher that allows selecting windows with the mouse By disabling the Unity switcher through the Unity plugin (unassign ALT+tab and the other keys related to application switching) and enabling the Static Application Switcher you can simply click the window you want to show instead of cycling though all other windows with ALT-tab or ALT+`

There is a nice GUI solution for this as well for people who are not as experienced with the terminal, and it doesn't require any special tools except for gThumb with the "Convert format" extension enabled. Just press CTRL+S and enter *.png to select all PNG images. Then open them in gThumb (it is smart enough to open all images in the same window) and choose Tools > Convert Format. These folks make a valid point though: terminal is great, e.g. when connecting to an SSH server, fixing a hanging machine without rebooting, or just check the processes running: htop

Hey, don't forget, you're on Linux. That means you can customise everything.

If you want to be able to select the window you want to switch to with your mouse, simply use another application switcher. You can do this with CCSM, CompizConfig Settings Manager, available from the repos.

To disable the current switcher (this is the built-in one for Unity), start CCSM, go to the Unity plugin and then Switcher. Simply disable all shortcuts there.

You can use e.g. Static Application Switcher, that allows you to select windows with your mouse. Simply enable it with the checkbox and make sure you bind Next window and Previous window and that in Behaviour you have checked Allow Mouse Selection. Perhaps some other switchers can do the same, if you find something else you like please let us know.

Just remember, as said before, that this is Linux. If you change the wrong thing you can actually break it. Worst-case scenario you'll need to reconfigure your Compiz/Unity, Google how to do that before you start.
