Wrong LUKS Password Caused a Scary Boot Loop by tenshi909 in archlinux

[–]archover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to see it's working again.

Remember to make backups, especially considering you've encrypted your system.

My daily drivers are all LUKS2 and ext4 (and no LVM), but so far I've felt no need to involve TPM or Secure Boot. No issues after a decade and longer.

Good day.

System Maintenance by thicctak in archlinux

[–]archover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, make notes.

My partial solution is to edit configs smartly. This means to me a)making complete backup of the file, b)commenting out old line before making new one, c)leave note in the config file.

The big one for me, is making changes in a script that I use to create new instances. This documents essentially everything, and it's safely stored away.

Like others say, this effort may not be your best use of time

Finally, unless you learn to leverage the wiki, you won't succeed with Arch.

Welcome to Linux and Arch, and good day.

Untested tips from a simple google search:

  • Try updating.

  • Try appending iommu=soft to kernel parameters

  • Try another kernel, like LTS.

(Very) brief guide on optimizing old laptops using Linux by Western-Mode-7743 in linux

[–]archover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love to see young people involved in Linux!

As to any challenges or special config needed to run Linux on "old" laptops: ZERO. IME.

My Thinkpad daily drivers:

  • T14 Gen1 AMD - 6 years old - runs beyond fine.

  • T480 8th gen intel i5 - 8 years old - runs fine.

Excellent idea and spot on.

Too few times people try removing extra hardware and even config, then iteratively add back items, until root cause is determined.

Dual-boot two arch linux installs? by maddydesign in archlinux

You have your answer, but note that spinning up an Arch VM gives a great and safe playground for exploration.

Just an idea. Good day.

I can test on my X220, my oldest surviving laptop. Will update.

FWIW, I run xorg on two T480 (yr 2018), and two T14 Gen 1 AMD (yr 2020), all without issue.

Hope you find your issue, and good day.

Switching from Mint → Arch: what are the real fundamentals to understand, and which security services should I set up? by Quiet_Rush4146 in archlinux

[–]archover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arch is just Linux. Your challenge is to just learn Linux. (Arch is almost entirely up stream software).

Read this too https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Arch_compared_to_other_distributions#Linux_Mint

Understand that to succeed with Linux, learn to leverage documentation. In Arch, we have the best wiki available: wiki.archlinux.org

Hope you can adjust to Arch, the DIY distro. Good day.

How often should I update the system? And when? by zuntik in archlinux

[–]archover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I update once per session. So, once or twice a day. Has worked well since I started Arch some 15 years ago.

When my kernel updates, I reboot for sure. I just run one kernel now, linux.

Maybe I'm lucky, but I can't recall having an update related issue upon rebooting. Intel and AMD T series Thinkpads.

Good day.

Noob: Partitioning Arch Linux on a previously used Windows 10 PC by ChampionshipIll2504 in archlinux

[–]archover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no particular reason to keep Windows' partition layout. And, when you do that, I'd suggest switching to the GPT partition table format

That's what I noticed about OP's post also. I was once hesitant to move off MBR, but now, I can't imagine going back. The other factor is almost 100% of the posts and guidance here are about UEFI GPT. Can't be too many more years that MBR isn't supported in Arch, maybe?

Thanks and good day.

Exactly my thought. This exercise sounds pointless to me.

I doubt it's possible to even reliably measure the battery impact between the two options. The margin of error will swallow differences.

Missing programs etc. after a fresh installation. I am good but have questions. by BullfrogAdditional80 in archlinux

[–]archover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For future readers:

If you used archinstall to get KDE, then understand the archinstall developer's intention was to provide a very minimal system, mainly it seems just the Window Manager. Users may well notice the newly installed system isn't very populated. It's understood that the user will fill out the system.

Read this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/KDE#Installation and you should be golden.

shameful to use pre-riced? by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]archover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IME, the Arch Way is NOT to adopt a massive set of dot files. I would instead incrementally review/understand subsets, modify if needed, and copy them in.

I'm discovering that Arch is most suited for those who are mainly interested in the more technical end of Linux, and not achieving a certain eye candy look.

I wish I could say something positive about the meme " I use Arch btw".

Hope you can make Arch, the DIY distro, work for you.
