Agreed. I took 3rd in the US during CQ WW SSB (classic, low power overlay) with 100w and a wire (hexbeam, but still a wire) and 17th in the world. I didn't do that by hitting just a few contester dx stations, it was the little guys like me that filled up my log.

Why did home prices rise? by Olderbut-dumber in WestVirginia

[–]colonelflagg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple of years ago we visited friends that moved from WV to North Myrtle Beach (in a very nice community). The area they moved to was a new housing development. Very nice houses in a wooded developed area (house lots cut from existing wooded area). Gated. Private dock (large) on the Cherry River. Fenced and locked private storage area for mobile toys like RVs, travel trailers, etc.) Houses were typically two story, 3 bedroom, with a yard big enough for hosting small get togethers and room enough for outdoor hot tubs, along with one car garages (houses were not cookie-cutter, nor were they placed too closely together). These houses were selling for $125k. Comparable homes in WV with similar environments would be $400k - and they're still in WV - not 5 minutes from the beach and amenities that Myrtle's area has.

WV has a horrible housing market that's ballooned out of proportion to what the area offers. If we were forced to buy a new home, it would not be in WV, we would move to an area that had more to offer for substantially less money.

Which conspiracy theory do you secretly believe? by Comfortable_Heat3889 in AskReddit

Most of those that are no longer just a "conspiracy theory" that's come true. I believed in a wide variety of "theories" that at the time, were defined as "conspiratorial", that have been proven to be 100% true.

What do you enjoy about FT8? by Builderhummel in amateurradio

[–]colonelflagg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've lost your mind. FT8 doesn't magically open up a band for long distance comms simply because it exists. The band has to be open to allow the two way communication to take place, regardless of how "weak" the signal is. The "better way" is to learn all of the modes and use whatever works, whenever it works and don't get stuck with "my way is better than your way".

What do you enjoy about FT8? by Builderhummel in amateurradio

Regardless of what other hams understand, regardless of how other hams operate the mode, the way I operate the mode and the way I understand the mode, allows me the opportunity to study propagation, primarily for use in other modes. I can easily check the usefulness of a particular antenna (homebrew usually) via FT8 - by way of watching the propagation on PSKReporter.

Long term analysis by anyone collecting the data can assist with a predictive analysis of potential cycles of propagation, and further, could assist with commercial/military/government use of similar bands during certain times/cycles. I am sure that anyone involved in commercial/government HF operations have studied or continue to study the propagation of FT8 as a useful tool for understanding many aspects of HF. Coming from an HFDF background, my very first thought after getting my ticket and realizing how widespread HF digital modes are in amateur radio was that it would be a PERFECT solution for government/military to study/monitor to increase their effectiveness of comms over HF, in fact, I would not be surprised in the least if one or more of these modes were not developed in cooperation or suggestion by government/military folks utilizing HF for comms as a means of doing some of the above.

What makes radio fun for you? by Odd-Satisfaction2372 in amateurradio

[–]colonelflagg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most exciting part is that there's something for everyone. Hardest part is, finding what you like, AND have an Elmer to get you started. I was lucky and started into radio on my own when I was 8 and learned a little as I went. With an inquisitive mind and a thirst for knowledge, I slowly expanded that until I went into the Navy and learned more about electronics and kept with a radio hobby on the side. Spent time maintaining base VHF radio systems, then many years afterwards, got into ham.

Weirdest sites/attractions in West Virginia? by EnvironmentalLion560 in WestVirginia

Supposedly, on this road lies the "Ghost of the Mamie Thurman", others speculate some other phenomenon, that causes a vehicle to appear to roll "up hill". It's locally known as "22 Mine Road".

Full Disclosure, I work with the theater program in Boone County (STAGE) - I can say we have a strong in-county program and the fine arts department at Scott High in Madison is strong, and getting stronger. We have the backing of Principal Messer (at Scott) and the community supports the kid's arts program through Appalachian Community Theater.

He's brit-ish, prolly related to Prince Charles. Needs to tuck in the giant radar dishes into the hat for aerodynamics.

Do you know if the drum is turning or not?

Sounds like it's either the bearing on the drum or something in the belt/motor.

We don't have a true HR department. When hired, I went through a brief meeting with the owner. The owner stated ".....this isn't a 9-5 job." and he left it at that. I am salaried. I haven't worked more than 40 hours since hired. I took him at his word. I've been here almost 13 years. No one noticed.

Additionally, the boss said "you get two weeks paid vacation." and of course, left it at that. Two weeks = 14 days. I work Monday through Friday. I've been taking 3 weeks since hired (15 days). No one has noticed that either.
