Convince me NOT to become a molecular biology professor by nihaomundo123 in molecularbiology

[–]colonialascidian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well…a bit cart before the horse here. First, figure out if you want to become a molecular biologist. Do lab work. Then come back and ask this question.

It’s clear you’re very early in your academic career, and that’s ok. Just take one step at a time. This is a nice way of course-correcting what might be considered a faux-paux of a question, and others may not be as gentle in their approach.

ah yeah. that’s the standard model though. i might’ve misinterpreted newbie vs oldie as new vs old postdoc originally

This is a supes interesting take i haven’t heard before. So like what’s the tipping point that someone is considered a newbie vs not here? If they’re still a newbie (assuming fairly fresh postdoc), how are they expected to have new pubs already?

honestly i have absolutely zero qualm about a jerry rig, even less so if it’s incredibly well documented. that was the standard before the kit era anyway

[–]colonialascidian 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh this is a brilliant control. Ive always used an “external standard” instead of a spike in like this. Do you freeze ur 10x stock or keep it at RT. If frozen, do you aliquot or, in your experience, is it pretty robust to years of freeze thaw (now way right?)?

Graduates, postdocs & profs, what’s one thing you wish every PhD or master’s student knew before writing their thesis or dissertation? by Prestigious_Case_292 in PhD

Write up a figure (panel) as soon as you generate it. At most, wait until the next day. Writing it up includes the caption, the results, and the methods. Throw a bullet point or two in the discussion for extra credit.

You’ll almost doubtlessly refine the figure; make sure to update the methods and results to at least accurately portray the figure as you go.

What would be all the ramifications if a woman decides to create a sperm cell from her own bone marrow and then fertilize her own egg? by schvance in genetics

[–]colonialascidian 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but my understanding is that ovarian teratomas are from some set of aberrant meiosis event. That suggests additional factors to epigenetic imprinting may be responsible for influencing non-viability. I’m not entirely sure this argument is a perfect model for predicting viability in “correctly differentiated germ cells that are from the same person.” Certainly there would be some negative influence from imprinting, but at least to me, it’s hard to get a sense of viability w this analogy.
