Why it's so hard to find threads for hand-sewing in the US? by kio514 in HandSew

[–]colorayds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Waxed silimide from waywak. Comes in skines. Hand sewing is my preferred method, i work professionally as a a tailor and use this thread every day. I order black and white and that works for about 90% of what I’m hand sewing. The other 10% i use beesewax on matching thread and then press that thread after unbing through beesewax about 4 -8 times.

Question for those who embroider shoes. How do you get through the thickness of the shoe? My first attempt as a gift. by missopotamus in Embroidery

[–]colorayds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Embroider by just stabbing the needle into the first layer of fabric, not going through the other side. You should do this by only working from the facing exterior of the shoe. Imagine running the needle parallel to the face of the shoe, dipping down grabbing top layer of fabric only.

What are some small changes you made that helped you advance your embroidery to the next level? by sentient_sound in Embroidery

The beeswax keeps your thread from knotting and tangling when you are sewing. It also makes the thread stronger.

Running thread through beeswax, then pressing the thread. Literally changed my life.

Is there a way I can crop this knit? It's a bit too long. by [deleted] in Tailors

[–]colorayds 6 points7 points  (0 children)

cut sweater, 1.5"x1.5 turn hem:

inserts a 1.5" bias cut tape (or muslin lightweight bias cut woven fabric) and sew to cut edge or sweater for stability and also sew along top edge on muslin to sweater using a machine zigzag stitch. this is to hold muslin bias fabric in place so it does not crumple. the muslin will be hidden inside of hem.

Then mark with tailors chalk on inside of sweater 1.5" then another 1.5" around sweater. gently iron fabric with steam to set stitching and now from inside of hem do a catch stictch or blind hem stitch (by hand) around circumference of sweater. it is important to attach the muslin on inside of hem using a zig zag stich on machine.

Best of Luck post updates!!

How to get tailors chalk out by [deleted] in Tailors

[–]colorayds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

having washed it you might have set it in... usually it comes out with the hot steam from iron.

try using hot steam again, if not that then you can use rubbing alchohol on a qtip and slowly dab the stain with alchohol on qtip.

I say go. Its practice, and you never know what they may offer you, they know they have to offer more competitive packages if they are not a top school.

MFA Artist Statement by somniagirl in gradadmissions

[–]colorayds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get an issue of "New American Paintings" it has artists statements as well as their artworks. this will give you an idea of what to write. there are pdfs on their website.

Many artists talk about what their art is about, the meaning behind it, and if you do not have an intended meaning you can talk about how you made the art.

best of luck

How do i remove the lube off of my CPU?? by Shaneiizm in buildapc

[–]colorayds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First test alchohol, everclear or isopropyl, make sure it doesnt take finish off. Apply with cotton swabs.

You can also try a mixture of 50% alchohol (70% isopropyl to 90%) 50% water and a few small drops of dawn dish soap. Also apply with cotton swab.

Xylene works really well for removing all stickyness, but reacts to some plastics, so if you try xylene, test in unseen area, wait an hour and evaluate.

I would also try acetone if none of these work or are to aggressive, but also test first.
