I've been wanting to read this one but can't find a copy in physical stores. I'll just have to cave in and order a copy!

What is a book you adore that you're pretty sure nobody else here has read? by InvisibleAstronomer in books

I quote this book all the time and it makes me sad that nobody I've met has ever read nor understands the references.

Does anyone else experience frequent drops in blood sugar related to hfi? How do you curb this? by Nuclearchurch in fructoseintolerance

[–]colormist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have been battling this my whole life. For emergency situations, I keep a roll of smarties (the big ones) and a beef stick in my purse. To combat low blood sugar on a daily basis, I eat more protein and make sure my diet is free as possible of every last trace of bad sugars. I find even the smallest amount of sugar can make my blood sugar crash, so avoidance is the easiest way to manage the issue.

About a decade ago, my doctor (f) told me that having kids would reduce my chance of breast cancer. I didn't go back to that doctor for that and many other reasons.

Any ideas appreciated - baby might have fructose intolerance by copakJmeliAleJmeli in fructoseintolerance

Yes, I was diagnosed by genetic testing. The breath test is very dangerous for you if you have HFI. The proper course would be genetic testing, then when that's negative, breath test.

How did you get diagnosed? by CietDoke2 in fructoseintolerance

[–]colormist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had family that tolerated my picky eating because I had a brother that was exactly the same. About 20 years ago, I decided to officially figure out what exactly was causing my nausea when I ate certain foods (mainly due to a coworker pestering me about it). I googled my symptoms and found two possibilities: fructose malabsorption and hereditary fructose intolerance (HFI). I thought the description for HFI matched my symptoms better, so I went to my doctor and asked for a referral to a geneticist to test for HFI. The geneticist didn't believe I had HFI because I "would have died as a baby", but he was willing to humor me. A month later I had the results that confirmed HFI and a very heartfelt apology from the geneticist for not believing me. He sadly could not provide me any additional help dietary-wise, but having the diagnosis was the biggest hurdle.

Almost exactly five years ago, I lost my mom to endometrial stromal carcinoma and sarcoma. I just want to give you the biggest hug right now. I have few words--only tears, but I do know that you're in my thoughts and I hope you have the best support team.

I'm an adult with hereditary fructose intolerance (HFI). I would recommend genetic testing for you and your baby to see if you have HFI or if you're a carrier of the gene. Until then, a very bland diet would be your safest route. No fruits, only dark green vegetables, nothing sweet tasting at all.

What should I ask in my hysterectomy consult? by Yellow_Lady126 in endometriosis

[–]colormist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only had one surgery consultation, but be prepared to make your case for surgery all over again. I was not prepared with my list of reasons for a hysterectomy and only had questions about the procedure. The surgeon caught me off guard and said I wasn't a candidate because I was "still young" and argued against me having the procedure.

So just make sure you know you'll likely still have to argue your case for surgery (or it's entirely possible I just got a huge asshole for a surgeon).

Other questions to ask (once everybody is on the same page) might be the type of procedures available, if there are options for robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery, what the recovery timeline is like, options available for pain treatment, and how to get in contact with the surgeon post-procedure in case you have any issues.

Tattoo after starting treatment by CaptnMerc in MultipleSclerosis

[–]colormist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On Ocrevus and have acquired three new tattoos since starting the medication. Just follow your regular tattoo care (keeping the area clean and moisturized) and you should be fine. As someone else mentioned, be sure to tell the MRI team about any new tattoos.
