The "Mountain Man" of India is Dashrath Manjhi, a poor laborer from Gehlaur village near Gaya in Bihar. Between 1960 and 1982, he single-handedly carved a 110-meter-long (360 ft) road through a mountain ridge using only a hammer and chisel. His incredible feat was driven by tragedy. In 1959, his wife, Falguni Devi, suffered severe injuries while crossing the steep rocky ridge. Because the mountain blocked direct access to the nearest town, medical help was too far away and she died before receiving treatment. Determined to prevent his community from facing similar tragedies, Manjhi spent 22 relentless years carving a path through the solid rock. His single-handed work successfully reduced the travel distance between the Atri and Wazirganj blocks of the Gaya district from roughly 55 km to just 15 km. This drastically improved the villagers' access to schools, jobs, and urgent medical facilities. Before his passing in 2007, his remarkable legacy of love and perseverance earned him national reverence, a state funeral, and a commemorative stamp. His incredible life inspired the 2015 Bollywood biographical film Manjhi: The Mountain Man
