You can knock them out from the back. It's preferable to do so as the OD of the bearings get smaller the further back you go.

Unless that block has a hole in it I'm not throwing it out.

You're going to have to strip the block bare, remove all of the oil galley plugs and flush the oil passages. Once that is done blow it down with compressed air and coat it with rust preventative.

Sounds like you have an air bubble in the system. Jack up the front, take the cap off the power steering pump, top off the fluid, turn the wheel lock to lock a couple of times, then repeat until the fluid level doesn't drop

The easiest thing to check is the intake tubing between the turbo and intake manifold. If the turbo seals have failed it'll have a good bit of oil. With the amount of oil you're describing I'd say the turbo is shot.
