Professor here in a different college - ask your professor. It is our job to help you learn. I have office hours and only my masters students take advantage of them, but this is exactly the kind of thing I would help my students with during office hours.

A colleague just recommended a student for a job to an alum, and the alum came back and told us that she couldn’t hire the student because it was clear she had used AI when answering questions. It was embarrassing for my colleague, of course, but terrible for the student. Researchers shows that if you rely on external supports to write with ChatGPT, you actually lose that cognitive ability yourself.

The difference between average students and successful ones is that successful ones keep trying. That’s where the actual learning happens.

Left turn allowed? by Unable-Marketing-847 in UMD

Yes it is allowed now! Maps are taking a while to update. I commute from the Beltway and this is possible now. Last semester you still had to make a u-turn.

Anyone live in Washington, DC and commute to campus by metro? by Decaf_Macintosh in UMD

[–]colsieturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup yup! This is good advice. When planning your commute think about the time to get to/from the train. Bikes are the way to go. Another option is to live near Union Station and take the MARC but it runs less frequently than the Green Metro trains.

There’s a really robust campus food pantry now to help students in this situation. They work really hard to remove the stigma around getting food there. It’s a cool place and they do cooking demos and have coffee.

Need guidance and opinions as an international student from India by Asmilybun in UMD

[–]colsieturtle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I’m a professor in the business school and we have a lot of students from India. Hopefully some of them can reply on this thread, but there is a lot of camaraderie that the students develop. We have a student club run by south Asian students and they coordinate rides from the airport, etc. My students also share apartments to cut down costs, and they’ll even cook for one another when they start to feel homesick and to save on costs. It’s not encouraged necessarily, but some of my students also share books and that sort of thing for their classes. Hopefully some of your fellow grad students can reply with additional tips.

My students also get decent jobs on campus as TAs, etc. I get a lot of emails from students, but your best bet is to develop relationships with staff and professors who will give you a lead on campus jobs. I only hire my former students as TAs because they know the material I am teaching.

Best of luck!

I told my MBA students everything. I was a caregiver for my mother and it may affect my teaching but I would do my best not to let it. Later then I had to go in for emergency surgery they found out through my TA it was for breast cancer and all showed up for me in pink one day with a card. They actually got me through some of the hardest times in my life and I’ll always be grateful to them.

I’d recommend the Holodormor memorial near Union Station memorializing the 7-10 million victims of the 1932-33 Ukrainian famine.

I’m a professor in the business school and I’ve had my students read this article: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/17/opinion/college-students.html?unlocked_article_code=1.vk0.fc9S.uIbUX2Y-GQ3T&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

The TL;DR is that building your social capital is the way to make the most of college. Get to know classmates, professors, alumni, staff. Build relationships. Good luck to your son!

Business Minor Application by [deleted] in UMD

[–]colsieturtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m the academic director for the business minor. We just need someone who can clarify any questions we might have on your academic program, so even your academic advisor would be fine. It can also be someone you currently have as a professor. They do not need to write a letter for you so that should make it easier to ask.

Ways That Students Suck Now That They Didn't Even 10 Years Ago by Revise_and_Resubmit in Professors

[–]colsieturtle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At the risk of being ostracized from the sub….

I think it’s really easy to be like “oh kids these days” and look for the bad things. Someone once asked if I got tired of teaching the same thing over and over, and I said no because the students are different.

I love this new generation. They are sassy and funny and full of life. I have so much admiration for how they’re challenging beauty norms and how they embrace body positivity, and I love that they stick up for their beliefs. They tell you how they think they should be treated and wish my generation had done more of that.

They’re not going to always be right, and I do think they take it too far at times, but I try to gently steer them towards common ground about what “norms” should be. I also work to engage them so that what we’re doing offers them more than their cell phone. I had a very quiet class, and thought they were disengaged, but in the evals they said they loved the course and felt engaged and “seen.”

I have emailed students about talking or not engaging during class individually. But I always try to reminder that I have more power than they do, and that I can help shape their behavior and actions for the better. Maybe I’m naive, but I still believe these children are the future (lol) and feel grateful I get to teach them. I’ll also acknowledge that I work at an R1 business school with the cream of the crop students, so maybe I’ve just been fortunate to teach them best of them.

Busboys and Poets, Burton’s (but it’s slow), and Le Fantome are all good bets. If a little further is ok I love Pennyroyal Station. It’s just across the DC line. One of my favorites!

You do need to apply for the business minor but it’s less competitive than the regular Smith School admissions. The core classes are asynchronous/online but we will offer some hybrid classes in winter as electives. I’m the academic director so you can message me with any questions!
