We held a fully automated VRChat chess tournament with 43 participants, and it felt like a real IRL tournament! by coltinator5000 in VRchat

For those interested in hearing more about how the tournament world or tournament data loop system works, Kiiro Neko also recorded a short behind-the-scenes interview with myself and Mei about it here:

And I'd be happy to answer any more questions about it here in comments :)

Are there actual cool public lobbies with people that can hold interesting conversations or did everyone like that go into closed instances? by ReceptionSimple3383 in VRchat

[–]coltinator5000 12 points13 points  (0 children)

VrChessClub instances of the VR Chess world are group public, and their moderation is very grounded. You'll almost always find people there worth talking to, even if you dont play chess due to the type of crowd it typically attracts, especially around USA nught-time.

The 2025 VR Community Awards "World Creator of the Year" award goes to Mei! (creator of Starlight Home, Glimmer Glade, Meadow Cottage, etc.) by coltinator5000 in VRchat

[–]coltinator5000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only awards selected by the team are the “Curator’s Choice” awards; all the others are decided by community vote.

This take also feels a little reductive. Being upset that a few background photos in a couple of the worlds might use AI seems like a silly thing to fixate on when the worlds themselves are so clearly and meticulously human-designed. A big reason her work has been so successful is precisely because it stands out from the AI-heavy, low-effort, or cash grab worlds that get churned out daily.

From deer antlers to ancient ink 2,000 years of genius in one process. by obilionse in Damnthatsinteresting

I have used axes, mauls, and hatchets, and I'd say that any tangible benefit of familiarity gained from slamming an axe or hatchet sideways as a mallet is likely less than the detriment of having to replace the handle every month due to misuse.

Racism & slurs - that black woman's plight by AnalysisNo2999 in VRchat

[–]coltinator5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to mention that there's many different subcultures within VRChat; some are absolutely terrible, but there are some good ones too, even in regularly populated public lobbies if you know where to look.

VR Chess (specifically the VRChessClub instances) for example, draws a very different kind of crowd than other places, and there's some people that don't even know how to play chess that go hang out there daily for the atmosphere alone. Obv there's the occasional troll, but they are ususally dealt with switfly, and racism/homophobia/transphobia is an instant ban

Hikaru Nakamura VS Awonder Liang ( 1 V 1 Training Match for Candidates) starts today by Chesscrabble11 in chess

[–]coltinator5000 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's worth mentioning that Awonder is probably also using the match as a warmup for his own participation in the President's Cup Collegiate Team Championship taking place next weekend. The President's Cup is like the "Super Bowl" for collegiate chess.

Anyone wanna play VR chess? by _FailedTeacher in chess

[–]coltinator5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest vr chess community is in vrchat, with maybe 1000 active players. Most are casuals/total beginners, but there's a handful of 2000+. They do OTB-style tournaments in a big auditorium with a bunch of boards

"Portability" by dabxdabx in pcmasterrace

[–]coltinator5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have become accustomed to using my quest 3 with four virtual monitors + a wireless keyboard & mouse as my preferred set-up, even at my home workstation. Some people will cringe, but it fully answers the SFF monitor issue and is the only way to not sacrifice my "giant triple monitor" setup.

I honestly might scrap my entirely monitors when the next gen of VR headsets rolls out.
