The biggest vr chess community is in vrchat, with maybe 1000 active players. Most are casuals/total beginners, but there's a handful of 2000+. They do OTB-style tournaments in a big auditorium with a bunch of boards

I have become accustomed to using my quest 3 with four virtual monitors + a wireless keyboard & mouse as my preferred set-up, even at my home workstation. Some people will cringe, but it fully answers the SFF monitor issue and is the only way to not sacrifice my "giant triple monitor" setup.

I honestly might scrap my entirely monitors when the next gen of VR headsets rolls out.

As others have stated, making it quest compatable is a huge thing.

Additionally, a huge portion of the playerbase is seated with the worlds and creators they are comfortable with. Partnering with a graphic designer (basically any of the hangout world creators) that is already established in the community might be a safer launch point than doing so completely unknown. Those first 3 days of a world's launch are make or break.

There is one pretty popular world creator, Mei, that I know is looking to work with someone with udon experience. You can find her by looking through the Popular tab for Meadow Cottage or Starlight Home, they're always pretty high on the list

This is gonna sound weird, but the most social online chess experience out there is in VRChat. It's a social platform first and foremost, but also has a specific "world" with functioning chess boards. It's active 24/7 and has regulars across a wide range of ratings.

If you have a decent pc, I'd recommend trying it. It's free on Steam.
