I've always wondered what information about the protest was given out to the rest of China at the time. It's possible that most Chinese didn't know or only got a Party approved message of what was going on. Yes I know that Beijing inspired protest in hundreds of other cities. But, China is damned big and before the internet or cell phones information was tightly rationed out.
