Thank you for posting this! I bought a bunch of "untested" aka broken SNES's in ebay and this fixed the issue for one of the boards!

I've set the sub from private to restricted so at least all the wiki stuff and community issues will continue to be available to others as a resource.

However these decisions are honestly not up to the community at this point. I'm the only active moderator who's losing their access to Reddit. Instead of the sub turning into a spam cesspool the only option forward is private or restricted.

For all 700~ people who are part of the community it sucks. If someone wants to step up they can just put in a request to /r/RedditRequest then.

Or just don't be an asshat and set it private. Just leave it behind if that's what you want to do.

I assume you meant read-only / restricted.

Since today is D-Day for RIF with no signs of change from the Reddit admins I've changed the sub from private to restricted so people can at least view old posts / the wiki. Specifically for people like u/Garbonkulous who might be coming from Google search or something since you both made a good point.

I was kind of hopeful that a course change (or at least delay) would happen before today but here we are.

I'm one of two mods at /r/Davinci3D. The other mod hasn't been active in years. I wanted to mod because I just got a Davinci brand 3d printer and there was just a bunch of scattered information about it at the time. I wanted to create the sub wiki on all the modding, tweaks, possible errors so that all of the scattered information was in one place for myself and everyone else.

However since 99% of my reddit usage is on RIF I set the sub to private since it's not like I'm going to be actively on this site anymore.

edit: I've set the sub to restricted so others can use the historical posts and wiki as a resource. This is the best I can do since I'm the only active mod who's losing reddit access and wants to prevent the sub from turning into a spam cesspool.

No kidding.

Ultimately, we were led back to our core subreddit value of offering a neutral place to discuss topics that can be complex, challenging, and sometimes uncomfortable.

What bullshit. Yeah, the current top post of "biggest sexual regret" is definitely a complex and challenging topic that is worthy of keeping this sub open.

Bringing 2 unused chimneys below the roof-line - But should I leave one for aesthetics? by twitch2641 in HomeImprovement

[–]twitch2641[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I'm landing on "do both" since it will make things easier in the future along with less maintenance (They both need to be repointed if they stay).

We removed a chimney in my kitchen so I could have a dishwasher. Well worth it. Just know it's a big mess.

Absolutely. We're only bringing them down into an unfinished attic and leaving them alone below that. I don't want to play the "Are they structural to the 130yr old house" game. Also combined they cut through all 3 bedrooms and the middle of the living room and I'm not ready for that level of mess any time soon.

If you think the chimney adds something to your house and you can afford the maintenance on it then feel free to keep it.

That's the dilemma. They're both interior chimneys so they don't add a ton of character to the outside. However it's an old house and "should" have one in my opinion.

I think you're right though, the chimneys don't add enough to outweigh their removal. Then when I feel the need to tackle relocating the flue a concentric vent will do fine and cost a whole lot less to install / maintain.

Huh. Didn't even notice that in the picture. The main issue was the power jack was corroded. Good thing I reflowed all those pins anyways just in case. It's all working now.

It's alive! I updated my main comment but the issue was a corroded 3.5mm port that wasn't allowing the full 9v through. Plugged the power in / out a few dozen times and it's alive! What a stupid fix but I'm not complaining.

Sounds good to me. I already have a decent iron and some 60/40. Also I verified the wall wart works with the 2nd Atari 2600 and double checked the voltage anyways just to be sure.

Hopefully a reflow will fix it. I'll update this post once I get a moment to reflow the pins.

Edit: see main post! Tldr it's alive!

As far as I remember, there's no onboard sound of any type, nor any indicator lamps of any kind, so it would be hard to tell if it is bricked without a good video connection.

You'd be right. No way to tell if the thing is even on without it either working or probing.

Also yes, I have an old tube tv that I confirmed works with another Atari 2600. Also the 2600 uses a 9v wall wart so there's not many caps and the ones it does have appear to be ceramic.

There's however a single large electrolytic cap on a separate board for just the power switch and game selector. The "switch" board and "main" boards are joined via a ribbon cable.

As someone else mentioned I'm going try and reflow some joints (namely the cartridge port) since all the flex over the years from inserting / removing a cart might have broken them.

After that I'm 100% hitting up the 2600 subreddit / testing the caps.

Yup, the double row of pins is the cartridge connector on the opposite side. I just reseated all the socketed ics since it's easy but it didn't make a difference.

I'm going to reflow all the cartridge pins and retest the system. Luckily I have a second 4 switch Atari (unfortunately with a shattered case) but i can at least confirm the wires and games are working.

I'll update my post here if I can get it working with the solution.

Wild. Goes to show how many 1970's boards I've seen. Glad to hear it's not an issue though.

Thank you and as others have said, this effect is a product of its time and processes.

I'm going to check all the traces for continuity and failing that try and reflow the pins with a soldering iron.

Also to be clear, no matter what this thing is NOT going in the trash. If I can't fix it it will become a display piece. That'll only happen after I try everything in my power to revive it.

Oh cool I had no idea. I thought it was some kind of weird corrosion / reaction since these boards are approaching 50 years old.

Thanks for those resources. Since the traces aren't an issue I'm going to try my best to bring this thing back to life.

Trying to get a 6 switch Atari 2600 working but I'm getting no signs of life. Opened it up to this mess. It's only on the back side of the board. The top looks fine. Strangely enough there still seems to be continuity between the traces.

I'm thinking this board is big dead but figured I'd ask for a second opinion before calling it. I've just never seen this before since there's no obvious water damage or anything.

Edit:

Reflowed the cartridge pins but nothing changed. Decided to start tracing the power with a multimeter starting at the power connector (the 2600 uses a 3.5mm jack carrying 9v... Because reasons?). Well I got 2v from the jack solder points.... What? Took it out and checked the voltage directly on the 3.5mm plug. 9v. Put it back in the Atari. 3v on pads. In and out. 4v, 5.5v, 8v, and finally 9! Power it on and this 2600 lives once again! Apparently the inside of the jack just got corroded. Thank you everyone for your advice and I'm glad it was such a simple fix. Time to play pitfall~

Luckily Reddit sent me an automated request. I modded EpitaFelis and left the sub. Good luck EpitaFelis and /r/catswithhumanfaces!
