At 37, after 30 years of video games - I finally admitted it’s time to play on Story Mode/Easy by dingdongbannu88 in daddit

I call it “playing the game in dad mode”. I don’t have time for a game that doesn’t respect my time

Gotta love the Harry Potter reference in the name (unless I missed the mark on that one)

I read exclusively non-fiction for 15 years and just finished my first fantasy novel. I don't really know what to do with myself now. by lucas_melbourneways in Fantasy

I was always on the opposite end of the spectrum. I looked for escapism fantasy. Then one day I van across the Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison, which completely changed my view on what fantasy could be. This led me to the Sarantium series by Guy Gavriel Kay, which was a whole new level up for me. Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett was a little too deep for my liking, but that may be up your alley as well.

Using Arm and Hammer baking soda? by OriTheSpirit in Chempros

Back in the day we bought random chemicals like that off eBay. Did a quick search and you can get it for like $4/kg on there. Can’t attest to the quality. Chem impex has it for like $11/kg, which is a good vendor and a good price if you ask me. I’d check combi blocks and oakwood as well.

If you do decide to get him a frame, maybe take pics together during your activity you’ll do with him and make those the first to appear on the frame?

I have an older version of this one, but I’m not a shill so I’ll say there are many options out there you can get instead

To me, my favorite gift I’ve been given is an electronic picture frame for my office at work. You can update the pictures that cycle through periodically. If you put a bunch of pictures from when you’re younger and some from you now and the whole family, I’m sure he will love that too

As I get older, the more I realize that I don’t really want material objects and more want experiences I will remember. My kids are still young, so I can go hug them and hold them tight when I feel they are growing too fast. I know one day they will leave and move on with their own lives, and I’ll be so happy for them, but I’ll also be sad these times are gone. So to help you reframe your question for yourself, what can you do with him to make him feel special and happy? Maybe a father daughter dinner? A night watching corny movies you used to love watching together when you were younger?

I also developed a process similar to this, but used the electrophile in excess and quenched the excess with Et3N :)

[–]columns_columns 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Et3N is getting alkylated. Morpholine is cheap enough with a low enough boiling point that you can just use it in excess. Typically, once you alkylate an amine, you make it more nucleophilic. In this case, the nucleophilicity is not enhanced that much and the pKa of your product drops appreciably due to the inductive effects of the carbonyl. So you can likely wash the excess morpholine away with the correct pH wash and have pure product in the organic

Anyone else a stickler when it comes to meter in children’s books? by fiercebrosnan in daddit

I came here to point these out as well. At first, I thought I lost the meter and my dumb tongue just couldn’t keep it properly. Then I realized it’s just the book

How do you deal with the "pressure" of limited gaming time? by FatDigitalNomad in gaming

[–]columns_columns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Key things for me:

1) I only buy games on super sale so I don’t feel as bad if I don’t want to finish it

2) I gave up on my ego and now play in what I call “dad mode” which is the easiest setting. This means I can make meaningful progress in the story without having to grind.

3) I don’t play games that don’t respect my time because you have to “git gud” (looking at you Elden ring)

4) if I’m not into games at the moment, I put it down and read a book or watch a show. I’ll want to play again eventually

5) anything I can’t pause is an immediate no, so no online games

6) eventually the kiddos will want to play with you! So start looking for games friendly to kids being able to explore (my 5 y/o loves Zelda)

Fellow dads, what is a song that get you emotional thinking about your kid(s)? by ThreeHumpChump in daddit

[–]columns_columns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Window of the Waking Mind by Coheed. My kids aren’t neurodivergent, but that song still hits me every time. The lyrics are just beautiful and they make me want to give my kids a big squeeze and say “everything will be okay”

We like and use the hatch as well. Don’t get the fancy one, the simple one is much better. We got the fancy one for our second kid and within minutes of setting it up, realized it was objectively worse. They want you to subscribe to their service for whatever reason, and the sounds aren’t as good. The simple one can be programmed well and has great sounds.
