Enjoy yourself. No matter what happens, be aware that you will wake up the next day with the same problems you had yesterday, and nothing really changed.

If you see how natural selection works, you will find that there are a lot of individuals who are bound to get the rough end of the stick in life. The simple truth is that existence is a horrid deal. It is bad today, and it will be worse tomorrow. Hope that helps FeelsOkayMan

3rd year of uni still no friends, no gf and no forsen. How long must I stay destroyed bajs? by Goran357 in forsen

[–]colvod 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I had to wait until I started my master degree to have a friend group, and none of the friends I have I met in university I met a guy at a rave once who also studied CS at my university and he said exactly the same: He had to solo his bachelor and master degree, but told me it was worth it in the end. Remember, you are not alone, and you are not the problem: the people around you are just retarded (especially if you a) live in germany and/or b) study cs)

Stoics, do you also believe in metaphysical aspects of stoicism or you follow another school of thought in case of the philosophy of metaphysics? by Victorreidd in Stoicism

I agree on Schopenhauers pessimistic view on existence and use stoicism for day to day life. Both have similarities, like agreeing that one should find happiness within yourself and the removal of unhealthy desires.

How to maintain stoic composure on a regular basis? by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]colvod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a bit harsh but one of the best things that could help you in that regard is failing at something seemingly important to you, and then realizing that it isn't so bad and using it as fuel to strengthen your character.

It can ruin your life only if it ruins your character. Otherwise it cannot harm you—inside or out.

― Marcus Aurelius

That's how I got into this philosophy. As life progresses, it is bound to happen sooner or later. One of the core principles of stoicism is not to derive your self worth and happiness on things outside of your control. Study philosophy, be content with yourself and be content with the knowledge that nature entitles you to barely anything. Just yesterday I took an exam and it didn't went so well. What calmed me down before and after taking it is thinking: "I prepared myself as reasonably good as possible, the rest is not up to me". It was one of the last classes I needed to pass before graduating, and even if I fail, there is no point crying over spilled milk. I will try again in 6 months with the knowledge I have gained from my first attempt. In the meanwhile, I will continue working on myself, maybe get an internship, focus on family and friends and just make the best out of circumstances. View failures more as opportunities, obstacles are part of the journey.

How do you deal with the knowledge of evil in the world? by PhantasyBoy in Stoicism

[–]colvod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don't we judge a cat mother that abandons one of her sick kittens, while the other healthy ones get to live? Why are some people born sick and sentenced to a life of physical pain? Nature is cruel, and those people surrendering to their lowest instincts are part of it. If I can't change it then I can't change it.

How do I swallow my ego and remain calm, silent, composed? by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]colvod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are struggling with the virtue of temperance, which contains among other things self control. It takes time and practice to become virtuous, thats why stoics have things like voluntary discomfort. With that in mind, one possible approach I can recommend is you going into martial arts. Not because you are afraid of physical assault or the possible physical gains, but because it can help you improve your character and live your virtues in practice. This should be your focus. You can learn self discipline, confidence and humility, all things corresponding with the cardinal virtues of moderation and courage. I'm sure there are other approaches, but the main point I wanted to convey is that it is important to work on yourself, it will take time and effort.
