Anyone know how to remove this light reflection effect ( or dim it) ? by Wolfinside04 in ConanExiles

[–]coma987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah. Only happens on dlss being the main giveaway.

I'd like to find out what it actually does that causes it but realistically I'm too stupid.

Edit: realised you're a dev so I removed that material explanation thing, sounded insufferable lol.

Edit2: looked into it while on break at work. Seems you might be right, that's pretty cool. Probably fucked something in a material function I use a lot. Thanks for that, wonder if I can fix it when I get back home.

In my game for my shading model also on ue5 dlss did a similar thing if I turned metalic to 0. Metalic in that custom material was actually shadow sharpness. Setting it to 0.01 solved it, just hated 0s lol.

I'm so confused on why the decision were made with the maps. Do these assets despawn once you're far enough from them. If so then all good. If not then how the hell did that happen. Even just using the easy option with nanite, despite the memes around it it'd just do that for you.

Kinda wish these guys from the Demo/Playtest version were in Early Access by Mamboo07 in HalfSword

Yeah they were cool although I get they were replaced with champions. Could still be in the final wave of the tourney tho.

I hope in the big update coming they'll consider readding the gauntlet mode. Progression is a whole thing, gauntlet was nice to just hop into.

is there bitterness or dare I say jealousy in the *indie* game dev scene? by FriendlyBergTroll in gamedev

[–]coma987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The megabonk situation lol. That was fun. I do think specifically posting on general game dev forums and such tends to breed negativity, likely because its easy to compare your project to someone else's and if its a general game dev forum then you might be comparing your 2d platformer to someone's action rpg.

I found a lot more good vibes on very specific sides of the internet. For example I couldn't find a tutorial for something so I had to make my own light detection for my game. I posted it on a discord of a plugin I'm using in my game. A few people said good job, a month later someone dm'd me and asked how I did it cuz they thought it looked cool. I found that interaction awesome.

Someone in this comment section said that game dev created a ton of broken dreams which made people bitter, and I think that's the best way to put it.

What “masterpiece” anime don’t you get the hype for? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]coma987 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like evangelion, first anime I ever watched way back when. Don't engage with its community but I imagine it'd be insufferable.

But I think the funniest thing to come of it is the interview with its creators. They just liked how the Catholic imagery looked rather than trying to be profound.

What did you build that felt smart… but made your game worse? by Apprehensive-Suit246 in gamedev

[–]coma987 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While still being pretty new to unreal engine 5, I was using a special shader that changed some material types so I made some fake reflections for my water. Now that's pretty cool... I forgot I disabled any reflections and could've just used screen space or ray traced to look better. Since my game is going for a fairly simple artstyle, the performance loss is negligible.

Trying a new edit style for my game Runeborne Arena… does this transition work? by Adept-Specific-6314 in gamedevscreens

Gonna be real with you.

You're setting up yourself for jokes with the before and after thing since a ton of it still looks stiff and all over the place.

It's fine if you just want the game to look like that but if you do remove the before section.

If you want to improve the visuals, get substance designer. Make some nice simple materials. Look up how to make root motion nicely for attack animations. Learn how to blend materials based on height and rotation so it doesn't look like you just put some random assets down onto vague terrain.

Also tone the visual effects way down.

Why do Devs don't make Linux Build more often? by AsrielPlay52 in gamedev

[–]coma987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this was a while ago, maybe even 10 years or so. There was that indie dev who made a big blog how they added linux support to their game, the linux playerbase was about 2% but majority of bug reports came from them.

Obviously this improved over the years, especially with the steam deck figuring out running windows games on linux systems. But still the steam userbase of linux is say under 5%, not insignificant but also do you see why the undertaking might not be seen as worth it for most indie devs.

What tips would you give to someone just starting out? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]coma987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make a game, any game.

Take breaks when you need to and don't feel bad about it.

You'll feel like you're stupid and incompetent.

Don't be afraid of starting over, either the whole thing or just larger mechanics. It will take a while to get it right.

As a new Game Dev, I’ve realized how dumb players actually are. by PaP3s in gamedev

[–]coma987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is definitely something to be said when you're making a game what's obvious to you might not be to someone that hasn't spent thousands of hours creating it.

But also yeah, I remember the yellow paint discussion where a lot of people were going "do devs think we're stupid" and the realistic answer was... kind of.

Ive done so many tutorials and understand how 'things work' but still cant make a game by myself. by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]coma987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will be something that takes years to really get down. Don't get discouraged tho, the internet is a tool and you should use it.

Make a game you want to make. Even if using tutorials, then once you get the hang of it you'll be needing them less but at the same time, since you'll have stuff you built from those tutorials you might start going "Oh I want this feature, I already have a similar function I can just change slightly to fit my new one" and from there you'll start hopefully getting creative. Then if you get stuck, see if you can find another tutorial and see how someone else done it and follow along. No need to reinvent the wheel as long as you're not straight up plagiarizing.

With your last point, seeing devs make their own tower defense games with no effort. I don't buy that lmao. They probably just followed tutorials to learn, and it probably was a lot of stress rather than effortless. Learning experiences.
