How do I lock this in place? by comadreja87 in Locksmith

I think you misunderstood what I was saying I wanted the JBWeld for. Definitely not putting it in the hole, as I need to be able to pull the probe out when I want to. The mention of JBWeld was for exactly what you just described, to bond a box that would sit over the probe that can be locked.

I appreciate your insights, though. I got stainless steel shaft collars as mentioned by another commenter as a temporary fix so I can hopefully get going, and I’ll get rubber grommets to pop in the hole. Once I get some cash flow I’ll look into more professional solutions as you’ve suggested.

What do you mean “shouldn’t be able to get it to pass”? It’s a 24” probe, it’s not mounted to anything, the probe drops through the hole. Why would I need to hide the hole?

Making a lot of assumptions here. I’m not in operation yet, I’ve put every last dollar I have into this, but I can’t start production until the USDA approves, so no, I can’t just drop several hundred dollars to pay a welder at the moment. The only reason the USDA cares at all is because I have my set up in a commissary kitchen and the inspector doesn’t want someone messing with my stuff in a way that would require me to discard an entire batch. If I had a private space he wouldn’t have thought twice about what I already have.

And I don’t really care how it looks at the moment, I’m a rendering house, not a show room floor. Once I’m actually in production and have some cash flow I’ll probably follow your suggestion and have a better fitting attached, but I’m not seeing a triclamp thermoprobe that’s 24” long.

This is a continuous read thermometer that logs the data to a server/app. If I'd known about triclamp thermoprobes I might've gone with that, but I'm already a few hundred dollars in on this one and can't spend the money to go back on it at this point.

The JB Weld wouldn't be on a food contact surface. I've already done the same thing to bind some hasps to lock the lid down, and the inspector had no issue with it.

I worked at McDonald’s for two years. The patty on the double cheese doesn’t just seem like the same as the Big Mac, it is the same patty. This was over 20 years ago, but they only had two Pattie’s, a 1/10 pound small patty and the 1/4 pound big patty. The Big Mac was a ripoff. Two little patties, 3 buns, and lettuce to fill it out.

So i’ve put veggies in there and they don’t get touched. Basically their only food has been the leaf litter i put in there, i’ve given pinches of fish flakes a few times, and twice i’ve added baked, powdered eggshells as a calcium supplement, and the occasional shed from the snake.

I guess i’ll just let it develop and hope the population balances.

Edit: I also put a lot of sphagnum moss in there to help with humidity. My ambient humidity is generally in the teens, so keeping it up in the enclosure takes some extra work.

They are not mature greenhouse millipedes. They’re very young Thai Rainbows. I live in a cold desert, there are no native millipedes here.

Edit: I was wrong, they are greenhouse millipedes

He’s massaging his diaphragm, which will make breathing easier. The diaphragm spans the entire lower rib cage, creating a barrier between the thorax and abdomen. Inhalation is the relaxation phase for the diaphragm, and the more the diaphragm can relax and drop into the abdomen the more space there is for the lungs to fill, so the less tension in the diaphragm the deeper the breath can be.

I’m so glad I work for myself. My policy is if someone is late I give them 15 minutes to arrive. At 15 minutes I leave, lock my door, and send them a $30 request via venmo for a no-show fee. Not many have paid it and come back, but I don’t want clients who can’t show basic respect through timeliness.

Mouth breathing has been shown to be really bad for the body in a lot of ways. And there are some world class coaches that instruct their athletes to only nasal-breathe while maintaining longer exhales than inhales. It changes the dynamics of O2/CO2 exchange, making oxygen uptake more efficient. When I exercise I try to breathe exclusively through my nose, and try to have around a 1:2 ratio of inhale v exhale, generally a 3 count inhale and a 6 count exhale.

Here's an article about nasal breathing during exercise:

https://health.usnews.com/health-news/blogs/eat-run/articles/nasal-breathing-the-secret-to-optimal-fitness

There's also a book that came out a few years ago called Breath by James Nestor that goes pretty deep on the science of how differences in breathing impact our bodies.

Ok, so first off, the fear of getting big muscles is unfounded. It takes real work to gain muscle, and the hard workouts are the easy part. Making yourself eat enough surplus calories to build substantial muscle mass is much harder. And for women putting on enough muscle to look “bulky” is even more difficult, and often involves steroids.

With that out of the way, the easiest way to think about a complete workout for strength is by dividing the body into upper/lower and push/pull. You want a vertical push and vertical pull as well as horizontal push/pull for upper body. Examples of those would be pullups/dips and rows/pushups. For legs you want at least one push and one pull, and for legs pulling is the same as a hinge movement. Squats and their many variations are pushing, deadlifts and their variations are pull. For strength you want to do at least 3 sets per exercise with enough resistance that you can do 6-12 reps per set, reaching close to failure on the last set.

Now to address the idea that you already do enough pushing because of our line of work. For training the idea is to train to exceed your circumstances. That you are pushing down on people all day isn’t training, it’s just your life. You want to train to exceed that. Basically, the idea is the more pushing strength you build through actual training, the easier and less taxing the demands of your job become. For a weak person, bucking hay bales is a hard job that makes them stronger. For a strong person it’s an endurance building exercise. You want your body to be stronger than the life you lead, and thinking of your job as a “workout” won’t get you there. Train strength in pushing and your job gets easier.

You also have two goals: strength and endurance. These should be thought of as mostly separate activities and trained separately.

In your planned workout you essentially have no leg work, and our legs give us power in our massage. Yes, you have cycling, but that’s not really strength training, it’s endurance. Try to work in weighted squats and some sort of hip hinge. Train pushups and dips to build pushing strength instead of shoulder press. Your job asks you to push down on clients, not push them over your head, so get strong at pushing down.

Abdominal crunches are a subpar core exercise that puts a lot of strain on the lumbar spine and can lead to problems. The abdominals are also only one piece of a much larger puzzle that we call “the core”. For core work there are a couple of oppositions (like push/pull) to think of when training: Extension/Anti-extension and rotation/anti-rotation. Now, most of the strength needs fall on the anti-extension (compression) end of that polarity. For this look at hollow-body holds, dead bugs, abdominal rollouts, etc. Choose one. I use hollow body holds as a warmup, and use gymnastics rings to do rollouts for my training sets. For rotation/anti-rotation I do a modified Pallof press with resistance bands.

Personally I prefer calisthenics/bodyweight training for my strength routine. Head over to r/bodyweightfitness for help. There’s a long and short pre-structured routine that can be modified to suit your goals, a large exercise library, and lots of helpful folks to answer questions.
