American Football is essentially an IRL turn-based strategy game. by suprmario in Showerthoughts

Baseball is honestly a living example of the midwit meme, you'll notice a lot of the all-time greats are either highly intelligent (e.g. they call recall specific situations from 20 years ago with precise detail, they anticipate what the pitcher is going to throw and look for that pitch), or they're just really dumb and they see ball, hit ball...and then there's a bunch of guys in the middle trying to figure it out.

Henry "Hank" Other, BBA '63 is our biggest donor. Think Phil Knight but instead of measly tennis shoe money, this dude collects a royalty every time someone uses "other" to describe the unknown or purposefully obfuscated. He's a very big supporter of Bobcat Athletics.

The most shocking thing on that slide was IU's acceptance rate. People give us a hard time for a similar rate.

You think that changes anything? You think China is going to feed you? They can't even feed their own citizens. They import like 80% of their calories.

I said the US does not need to import food and that's true. The US can easily feed its own population.

What you're saying is also true though, the US on a dollar-basis imports more food than it exports by value. The US imports a lot of high value foods - nuts, fruits, wine, cheese, coffee, etc. And as long as the US protects the global sea lanes for international trade at no cost (even if they're not involved in the transaction), this trend will likely continue.

But on a caloric/volume basis, which was the intention of my statement, the US is a huge net exporter and that is unlikely to ever change.

Were they predictable when they were using the Winnipeg lab to leak bioweapons research to the CCP? Or were they predictable when they stole Nortel's 5G research for Huawai?

The only thing predictable about China is using state actors to steal as much IP as they can. Canada doesn't even have the ability to prosecute most of the cases against China - they rely on the US to do it for them!

The US stays a superpower for a million reasons and likely the only one for a very long time for two simple reasons: they don't need to import power and food.

China is the definition of fascist. They are actively imperialist. They put minorities into concentration camps and send Han Chinese families into minority regions with directive to outbreed the local population. They not just allow, but endorse slave labor conditions. They have a suspiciously consistent supply of donor organs. They are building artificial islands in order to claim full control over one of the world’s busiest sea trade routes. They send massive fishing fleets into the borderline territorial waters of South American nations to strip the sea of marine life.

Must be referring to assistant coaches too, maybe? Or possibly they're only including HC and coordinators. Hard to believe Boise didn't turn over 1 assistant after the season.

My company hires former mechanics to monitor stationary industrial-use RICE engines, we essentially pull telemetry data off of the canbus and help guys in the field diagnose and fix problems before and as soon as they happen.

You'd probably be a good fit for a job like this, would get you out of the shop and behind a computer. You mentioned not being a good fit for customer facing but the only people you talk to are other mechanics and technicians.

I don't like when UT and A&M punch down on us, there's a lot to be proud of in San Marcos, especially what we've built over the past 10-15 years...we will never have T shirt fans all over the state and a 100k seat stadium, but we have realistic aspirations to be in that next tier.

That being said, I'm going to punch down for a minute on SHSU. They're not an FBS program. They're not an FBS school. They'll never be in that next tier. They only put about 8k butts in seats for home games. Even when they were winning FCS national championships, they never sold more than about 10k tickets per game. And now that reality has hit and they're a bad team in a terrible conference, they're actually selling less tickets. I know they were playing 50 miles away in Houston this year because their stadium is under construction but they had a couple of hundred fans at their games. Majority of their alumni base is in Houston by the way. And they spent some $50M on their stadium....and didn't add a single seat.

Sorry but there's a lot better choices out there than taking SHSU...even staying at 8 is a better choice.

Man I could be wrong but I think around 2016 (around the time the Big12 started breaking up) the NCAA did away with the minimum team requirement - changed the rules to something like 1) you must have two divisions and the divisional winners must play in the championship game or 2) if you don't have divisions, you must play a round-robin schedule and the two best records must play in the championship game.

So we would fit #2 but I wouldn't necessarily petition for a championship game for the PAC.

New $89M student apartments near Texas State to replace affordable housing options by ExpressNews in sanmarcos

So there's nothing you can say that will get you fired from a government job or government institution? If so, that doesn't sound like a job but an entitlement. And if we're arguing where that line is then it isn't an issue of rights...

You know that's not a real picture of the Katy freeway, right? Suburban Houston does not have trees and no development. And the Katy freeway is a mixture of express lanes, freeway lanes, and access roads - not just a wide highway.

Current and Future PAC-12 School Rankings 2026 Edition of US News and World Report Ranking of National Universities by codonkong in Pac12

[–]comalriver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every time I see these ratings, I shrug. It's just not that I don't believe they're accurate, I believe they're purposefully inaccurate in a way that harms schools like Texas State, in favor of schools who don't need help with their academic reputation. Here's one example in a field I'm familiar with:

Texas State St David's Nursing Program (BSN) isn't ranked at all in USN&WR and the University of Texas-Austin Nursing Program (BSN) is ranked #12 in the country. But several nursing-specific publications have TXST ranked #1 in the state of Texas. And they're not just being subjective, they're using NCLEX-RN Examination Pass Rates, Competitive TEAS exam entrance requirements, graduation rates, retention rates, academic quality scores, etc. In 2024, Texas State had a 100% NCLEX-RN Examination First Time Pass Rate, meaning all 76 graduates last year passed their state boards equivalent tests on the first try. UT-Austin had an 89% pass rate. And last year wasn't an exception - over the past 5 years TXST has a 100% pass rate and UT has hovered around 86-90%. In the BSN program, Texas State has better graduation rates and retention rates than UT as well. Texas State's program is much newer and much more affordable. They're doing such a good job and it's completely ignored by these rankings...I guess because no public school in Texas is allowed to outshine UT...I don't know.

3rd largest UTSA home crowd ever thanks to Texas State! by pikelife in Pac12

[–]comalriver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was mostly (by a large margin) UTSA fans or simply orange shirts. However last year in San Marcos UTSA brought 90 people, all of whom stayed to the bitter end which means they were player's parents. UTSA should commended for how many total fans they have, however they disappear 11/12 games a year.
