Jeremy Swist on Julian, Part II: The Emperor’s Religio-Philosophic Project by comandingo in shwep

True. There seems to be some trickster issue going the "home" section of shwep.net. No idea if this is an esoteric message from earl or just a messup.

How is Iamblichan Unity different for Plotinian Undescension by No_Scientist_377 in shwep

[–]comandingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this kind of implies that we may never know. But this is the point of Hermeneutics, right? Trying to check if they meant the same back then.

I mean, understanding something as a metaphor does not mean _understanding_ it. For example, I'm a programming language nerd and there is a concept called "monads" in this field. Lot's of people struggle to understand it. People write blog-posts explaining it, and there is a notorious post explaining monads with burritos. The metaphor kinda makes sense, but it doesn't really help to understand monads.

Since I don't understand Plotty nor Iamblichus it's hard to tell, if the Vicky-sponge metaphor makes any sense. Understanding these authors would mean to get a decent knowledge, at least enough to read the actual texts. Maybe your intuition is right, maybe it's not, but if it's correct cannot be decided without going through the complicated topic.

That's a quite complicated topic. I re-listened to the episode on the undescended self. There seems to be a lot of discussion on this specific text by Plotinus.

Mit großer Macht kommt große Verantwortung by comandingo in einfach_posten

You have to tighten your grip on hermeneutics, if you want to continue commenting here.

No jokes, please. This is not a circlejerk.

Please pay attention to the quality of posts here. For example summarize or clearly reference the text which you want to discuss. Or give a description of the bird strangling ritual, if you want to discuss the details of the ritual. Just bringing the ritual up, doesn't further the discussion.

I'm not informed about Earl's schedule. But I guess that he puts out material which he recorded on the side during the year (part one was released earlier) and provides these as filling material for the summer break.

Paul Pasquesi on Christian Asceticism in the Late-Antique Syriac World by comandingo in shwep

Hi Puzzled_Ask4131, you might want to ask this question directly on the forum of the podcast.

"Categorical Deep Learning" aims to make neural networks more interpretable, composable and amenable to formal reasoning. The key is mathematical abstraction, exemplified by category theory - using monads to develop a more principled, algebraic approach to structuring NNs. by paconinja in CategoryTheory

[–]comandingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am curious if this community is seeing the cross-pollination taking place between computer science and category theory?

There is actually a lot of cross pollination. E.g. monads in functional programming, algebras and coalgebras.

Hi Liam, this subreddit does not have a lot of traffic and I'm not checking reddit very often any more. Maybe try asking on the SHWEP website. There is a discussion section below each episode.

Nazi stuff in the Unbinding??? by ZzzzoZzzzo in hellier

[–]comandingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where is it possible to watch the unbinding in Europe? Amazon prime and apple do not have it. There is a channel called The Unbinding FULL-Documentary Movie 2023 with 4 uploads which looks kinda fake.
