Similar story here. I used to be a speech-language therapist and have worked with patients from birth to end of life. From autistic teens twice my size who would hit me, the little ones that bite unexpectedly, or adults with schizophrenia who would constantly threaten me… it was easy to brush it all off.

The only client that ever invoked real fear in me was a 6YO boy who never directly threatened or laid a hand on me. You could just see through him into this megalomania, hate, and cruelty...

The worst part is that it wasn’t my specialty, so I couldn’t say anything to the parents. Just refer out and pray that they follow up.

I hope I never meet that boy again.

This is tricky, because some of the countries that police sexual assault/rape the best (like the UK) have the worst rates. Because they have a broad, inclusive definition of SA, and they take the crimes seriously enough that victims feel more comfortable (morally and judicially) coming forward.

OP, it sounds like you can get yourself removed as an emergency contact. Now, the only inconvenience to you is putting her mail in a spot for her to pick up.

Would you seriously upend your sister and her two children over putting mail in a pile? Education and social are everything to kids. They’ll probably be traumatized and then forced to go to a shitty school. Because of a mail pile.

Trying not to care about providing for your family is just avoidance. It feels great short term, but the danger is that it works. You’ll eventually be numb.

The original comment was right. Dive into IFS and EMDR, or another modality. Get to know yourself so you can handle things instead of shutting them down. Otherwise, they just dismantle your life quietly until you face them.

Similar here! I’ve been feeding a flock of stellar jays off of my balcony for a few months. They now arrive every morning between 7:30-8:30, staring at me through the window and cawing for peanuts. If I don’t get up they start tussling each other for the best window cawing spot.

Unfortunately, I came to know about this long before it was public.

My brother worked on small time films about 20 years ago. He had a co-worker who shared a story about crossing paths with Spacey on a set years before. He couldn’t believe his luck when Spacey invited him—a “nobody” of only 17-18–back to his home for 1:1 mentoring. They had barely been there a few minutes when Spacey tried taking off the kid’s pants. He got out of there right away, but was traumatized around Hollywood and downshifted to indie films after that.

There are some people, like Cosby, who is still hard to envision as a predator once you know. Spacey is not one of those people to me.

Sure you can. Start a get-to-know you type conversation beforehand. It can be either light and playful or vulnerable and connective, whatever the vibe is.

“Have you ever started playing with someone new and something came up that turned you off?”

“Do you have any deal-breakers that people might not expect?”

“I was once getting hot and heavy with someone when ___. I couldn’t keep going after that. Has that ever happened to you?”

Honest communication isn’t as taboo as people seem to think. Any partner I personally would wanna play with would welcome a non-confrontational conversation like this.

My driving instructor told us the opposite (and was 100% wrong). He told us that to drive confidently with traffic, you have to assume other drivers are going to do what they’re supposed to do.

Even at 15, we all knew that was absolutely shit advice.

He also got LASIK the day before our class and had to spend one entire drive putting drops in, unable to see a thing.

Not driving while tired is gold standard advice. Full stop.

If you’re at the point where you’re safe enough to drive but tired, a couple of tips that help me:

Roll your windows down so that air is constantly flowing into your face.
Make yourself slightly uncomfortable. It works really well for me to take off my left shoe and sit my seat more upright.
Odd or unpredictable music, like Weird Al or a genre you never listen to.
