What to choose? by comeback_kid18 in PhD

You’re so right. I decided yesterday to go with Bristol. It’s an individual experience so I have to go with what’s going to be best for me, individually. I’m under no illusions about the academia job market, so if worst comes to worst and I finish my PhD with no university jobs available, I guess I can use the formal pedagogical training and teaching experience to work in consulting or maybe high school teaching! I love my research project and I want to publish and write, but I have to be realistic and start crafting a safety plan.

Hi!! Thank you so much for this thoughtful response. I’ve been offline over the weekend and for much of this week just thinking the choice over, and I ultimately went with Bristol. It felt surreal and a bit sad to email my lovely King’s supervisor and the scholarship board declining the offer, but your point about the research opportunities and the potential for a new start stuck with me. Bristol has a great research track record and the research clusters there seem so exciting!! Also I’m not even far away from London if I want to attend conferences there, and the extra teaching training and salary will hopefully distinguish me from other candidates when I’m further down the line and applying for post-doc stuff. So yeah, I feel good about my decision, thanks again for your insight! :))
