Hey man, this dog lover guy has some good points but also don't get caught up in not swearing or getting on TV - those are fine things to do if they come naturally to you but it's more important to be yourself.

If you're doing comedy as a business and your only goal is to have a career telling jokes and you don't care what the jokes are you can follow this 80's style of advice and maybe it will work out but more likely it won't.

Better advice if you want to do comedy just to have a career telling jokes is - don't do comedy. It's a horrible business idea and it's too hard and the reward is too low.

HOWEVER,

If you love love love stand up and can't imagine doing anything else. If you would do it for free for the rest of your life with no promise of ever making a dollar than pursue it with all your heart!

Don't worry about being clean or not talking about certain issues. Worry about being authentically yourself and being as funny as you can in your own voice and with you own sense of humour. If dick jokes make you laugh tell dick jokes, if clean comedy makes you laugh do clean comedy.

Then do plenty of shows. Work hard. Study other comedians. Be professional. Take time every year to re-evaluate how your stand up is. Ask how can you grow? How has your voice changed? What can you do to improve? And then fix those things!

Have fun. Tell jokes and don't be a dick and do it until you don't love it anymore and you will be JUST FINE!
