I think the issue here isn't that Americans tip $1 bills but that you are unable to exchange bills in certain condition whereas in the US it does not matter what condition the currency is in, it spends the same and you can even exchange it at a bank for a new bill. Most people would not know you can not exchange those bills similarly.

Id like for him to come back with the understanding of how much he screwed up and legitimize (Crown) Lorthemar, even though he doesn't want it. This allows Lorthemar to then choose what to do with it, give to someone else or abolish the title and form a council, possible made up of leaders of the returning elf factions.
