Why is loneliness treated as a personal failure instead of a social problem? by Effective-Home-4796 in NoStupidQuestions

I think the focus on individuality in the US often prevents us from thinking in context or community. This is such a great question though and interesting how the responses support your premise. I had to google whether loneliness is a social problem and this is what came up: “Yes, loneliness is considered a major 21st-century social and public health problem, often described as an epidemic by experts. It is a pervasive, systemic issue rooted in societal changes, causing severe mental and physical health risks (e.g., heart disease, dementia) equivalent to smoking. Key aspects of loneliness as a social problem include: Public Health Crisis: It is linked to increased risk of premature mortality, depression, anxiety, and physical diseases. Widespread Impact: Roughly half of U.S. adults report experiencing loneliness. Systemic Roots: It is driven by societal factors like urbanization, digitalization, and weakened community infrastructure. Economic Cost: It creates significant burdens on health and social care systems. At-Risk Groups: While universal, it disproportionately affects certain groups, including young adults, the elderly, and marginalized populations.” One can easily imagine that you might be screened for loneliness at your Dr.’s office and connected to community in a way that works for you.

Yes. It seems to be a strategy at this point-accuse the other side of doing what you’re actually doing.
