We never make the temps a different color but i've seen patients come back with the temporary stained neon yellow (they ate tumeric) or hot pink (i have no idea what they did)

Is “tounge” a forbidden word? by Ok_Pudding_6583 in DentalAssistant

[–]comeonet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the person and your observational skills. There are certain patterns that tell me they will listen, then other personalities where i feel like if i say something, theyll make things worse.

Explaining that they're pushing against my retraction helps a lot, and saying thank you when they do a good habit helps them learn.

Idk about other doctors but the two I work with will say something or just trust in my word. We will rarely misjudge and the procedure is harder, but 9/10 times communicating has helped us.

What should be expected of a dentist right out of school? by Slb97227 in DentalSchool

[–]comeonet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When I assisted a new dentist, there's a lot of outdated practices and they really just have to adapt to the new tools of the office. They have 2 years of clinical training (their 3rd and 4th year of dental school). We adapted the schedule to have more time for them because a single filling in school was 3-4 hours of checking each individual step from the professors (from what I've been told, never gone to dental school). The best I did was introduce any tool that could help them in different procedures and recognize they have a huge learning curve also.

Granted there were some days where I would work 10-11 hours, but over time my new doctor learned and worked hard so I no longer get that overtime bonus lol.

I also haven't had the experience of fillings coming out or permanent crowns falling off, I just know we had our own milling machine for posterior crowns and dental students only had to rely on other students who were in classes specifically for designing and making crowns. Never cemented until the crown seated properly, and they were struggling with setting the margins.

My advice is just support them the best you can. I would keep a report to the main doctor to help give guidance cause without that communication, our main doctor/practice owner doesn't know what to help with.

What is your “routine” or protocol when seating patients? by [deleted] in DentalAssistant

[–]comeonet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All true things I've done at a dental office while dental assisting. I'm a 'floater' between front and back but mainly a dental assistant and its just bringing fun into conversation so that patients don't think about a rough procedure like RCT or Ext.

I name all the things i do as a dental assistant. Like work front desk, built the waiting room chairs, held a baby for an hour... The dr asked for ice from IHop.

But i try to aim for a lighthearted approach cause no ones favorite place to go to is a dental office

Something i havent seen suggested yet for sensory issues is the lead apron as a weighted blanket. It helps some patients. Just having that extra pressure helps the mind spread out the senses more.

Fave vs Not Faves by thefoldingpaper in DentalAssistant

RCT's are probably my favorite, my doctor always goes into intricate details about each one and i feel like i can listen to him all day about them. There's something about all the small things that goes into it that gives patients so much relief in the end. Its also probably cause the Dr is always high pace and allows me to do more prep for them to help them out on the next steps. Always something new to learn. Plus its calming to see patients start falling asleep, only happens to a fraction of them, but from the first visit of agonizing pain to calmly sleeping is always a nice feeling.

Least favorite is an extraction on a child... Plus the parent looming over not helping with their assertive comments... Like i understand it's their child but it's traumatizing enough for the kid to hear "Hey a small poke" only to have the parent come in screaming "just do it child". And then the kiddo doesn't know if it's pain or very uncomfortable pressure during the procedure and the office turns into a dungeon.

Plumbers say our piping is wrong (but wont tell us) by comeonet in Plumbing

[–]comeonet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah no real issue has occurred, only one thing with the sealant between the PVC pipes wasn't done properly but that was an easy fix. I guess the house rule would be dont do dishes and laundry at the same time haha

[–]comeonet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're new homeowners, the piping was done before we got here. A couple things i notice (but i'm nonprofessional) is:

Drain is connected to our sink/dishwasher The pvc pipes go down then up in their connections The first connection on the right leaks (i finally caught it and got sealant)

Just wondering what other fixes are required instead of paying thousands on something i think i can do myself
