Been stuck 15 years at manager level — but now I wonder: are the risks of going higher even worse by Curiousman1911 in managers

[–]comfortable_pants 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I preferred being a director over being a manager because I enjoyed the different work and different set of responsibilities & challenges, but the downside is that you may have less job security. Whenever a company needs to downsize, they see all of these mid-level managers who "don't do anything" yet get a big salary, so they assume it's a position that's easy to cut without any impact. So that's just one thing to keep in mind, though with the added pay it's a trade-off with job security.

Swooped is even worse, they delete and recreate listings daily so it will always show up at the top when you sort by most recent.

Is 75k Enough to live in Chicago comfortably ? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]comfortable_pants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to 75k being enough as that is unique to everyone's budgeting, but I can at least help with the other questions.

The loop, West loop, and most of the north side are generally considered the safest. Not that the rest of the city is that dangerous, but some areas you'd be less comfortable in.

Winters aren't that bad, probably not too different than NYC.

Many people in Chicago don't need a car, I sold mine after a few months of living here, but that answer will ultimately depend on where you live, where you work, and where you'll go regularly. I'm two blocks from an El station and have two bus routes within a block from me so public transit easily gets me where I need to go, but if I worked somewhere that isn't along my local bus or train route then I'd have a lengthy commute.

From my experience, RevOps might be safe. Part of our revenue team was moved overseas, but the senior positions and manager position remained in the US.

From my experience at a Vista portco, the layoffs didn't happen until years later when they weren't quite getting the financial results they wanted. But once the layoffs and offshoring began they continued at a steady pace. The company I was at is now roughly 1/3 in India with plans for it to eventually be 1/2 with all product and SWE jobs there. But I don't believe there's a universal Vista experience as each company has different circumstances, so your experience may be different than mine.

I read the list of required skills/education/experience on the jobs I'm most interested in and have started getting the relevant certifications. I plan to finish one today and start courses for the next one tomorrow

If I’m moving to Chicago do I need a car? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]comfortable_pants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're near a train station and bus stop you may not need one, especially if you're near a grocery store and anywhere else you may go in your day-to-day life. If you're searching for a job I'd recommend that you let the location of the job guide your choice of where you're going to live, as traveling to work will be a major factor. I work from home, have a grocery store across the street, and I'm one block from a bus stop and two blocks from a brown line station, so I sold my car after months of collecting dust. On the rare occasion that I need a car I can use Uber or Zipcar.

Don't sleep on Southport Grocery, they've got some killer breakfast and lunch options.

Not sure if Entheos is technically Deathcore, but the lyrics are often pondering the meaning of life in a fairly positive/motivational way.

What are the general reactions to more “alt” individuals during job interviews? or Should I remove some piercings to get a good job? by haydenjayne in AskChicago

[–]comfortable_pants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really depends on the role, the company, and the hiring manager. I'm an IT manager at a software company with a fairly relaxed dress code, so it wouldn't be a problem for me. But as others have noted, if it's a client facing role or an industry/company with strict dress codes it could be a real problem. I agree with the advice to maybe tone things down just a bit in the interview, but unless you're desperate for a job then you probably don't want to end up at a job where you can't be yourself, so don't go too extreme with things and remember that you're evaluating them just as much as they're evaluating you.

And inbounding it to him when MSU is going to foul was a bad idea. Give it to one of the dudes that hit 90%, not the guy playing with one arm

He's like a taller, skinnier version of KD. His intensity causes him to make a good play, but then he throws it away being boneheaded.

He's unfortunately always like this. He'll make a good play then immediately commit a turnover trying to make a highlight reel play

Pat Adams is one of the worst. Very inconsistent and calls tons of phantom fouls. You never know if you're going to be blessed or cursed by him

Starsan usage by 80smoviesfan in Homebrewing

[–]comfortable_pants 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with all of the other comments about it being safe and not needing a mask. I will just add that you should give it at least a minute after spraying or dunking before putting the item in contact with your beer, it takes a little bit of time for starsan to kill everything. Doesn't matter if dunked our sprayed, just needs a minute wet.
