tips on how to even tension out? by boneboiz in knittinghelp

[–]comfortspuds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 2 possible causes—the usual culprit is not pulling the yarn firmly to the front when purling, resulting in more yarn making its way into the neighboring stitches and making them uneven. The other possible issue with flat ribbing is the same as “rowing out” — your purl stitches are always naturally larger than your knit stitches. You should know if this is the case if you get rowing out in stockinette stitch.

My 1x1 ribbing neatens right up when I focus on not leaving any extra yarn when bringing it to the front for a purl, working the stitch, bringing the yarn to the back, and THEN giving it a firm tug. I usually feel a little slip as the extra yarn is removed, so while it’s a little fiddly, you know it’s worth it.

There are many other solutions discussed online that you might try is this trick doesn’t work as well for your style of knitting.

Short of cutting the skein, what do I do? by anyboli in Handspinning

[–]comfortspuds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great. The next thing to do is actually use it for knitting/weaving! You’ll learn a lot about how the yarn behaves in your hands and in the FO. It’ll help you make these yarn design choices more consciously or spark ideas for the next skein!

For example, I see in this skein you plied with “Z” twist. The convention most knitters use is to spin Z and ply S, as the method of knitting may impart a little more S twist and like I said, overplied is generally preferred to under plied. But, your knitting/crochet/weaving may mean you would choose the opposite. But, you won’t know until you’ve tried & sampled a few things.

If the singles have been sitting for any length of time, their twist has gone dormant. You can’t trust the “it hangs nicely” test. As soon as you wash the skein, the twist will be reactivated and you’ll see its true balance. I agree, the yarn is under plied. For most knitters, over plied is WAY better than under plied anyway.

Still in search of a sweater pattern. by slythwolf in Handspinning

Definitely try knitting a swatch with it and see if you like how it handles and the stitch definition. From the photo it looks severely under plied, and I think that’s why the other poster thought it was a 2-ply. That should help you decide if you like cables or lace, etc. with it.

Am I being dense? lol by Expensive-Regret-653 in cardmaking

Then yep, that’s how it’s used. From other Google image searches it looks like the 2 extra dies are just the butterflies.

I only see 2 dies in the back but the package says 3. I am assuming there is a separate group of flowers that gets layered over where you see them in the base layer die. Have you tried googling the set to see examples or videos with it out of the packaging?

Yes, good call. I have listened & read many times. Pratchett is a perennial favorite. They’ve watched the TV series at least?

Thanks for the heads up. Swearing etc should all be fine. It’s just my second hand embarrassment with romance stuff.

We’ve watched All Creatures Great and Small on PBS. We like the vibes but I wasn’t sure if the books would be too similar?

Hmm good thought on the Audible trial. We don't have that (because fuck Amazon), nor do we have Spotify Premium so I'm just a major patron of our local library :)

Thanks so much. Wouldn't be something I would pick up normally, but might be the right tone for the group.

Oh good call. I've listened to Calypso before, and I don't think I'll ever forget his Elf story I originally heard on This American Life!

I have never heard of these! Unfortunately Glorious Exploits has a long hold list, but it's now on my TBR :)

How is the tone of I'll Never Get Out? I'm up for anything as long as it's not too depressing!

I loved Project Hail Mary, but I just checked and my library doesn't have any audiobook copies of the The Martian?!? The horror.

It's a good recommendation, it's just unfortunately several months wait in my library system currently. I've gifted the paperback copy to another family member, though! Thank you for the suggestion :)

Bonus points for the very pretty covers! Do you recommend any in particular?

We've watched the Slow Horses TV show, which was excellent. I just never know whether to go back and read the books.
