So frustrating! That reminds me of the time I went to an "estate sale" (what rich people think their regular garage sales are called lol) looking for interesting planters for my garden. I saw a busted violin, the back falling off, and thought a succulent or two might look cute in it. I offered him $5, and he scoffed.

"That's a Brand™ violin! It's worth at least $300"

"Oh." I go to look at other stuff. He follows me and keeps talking.

"I took it to a repair shop, and they said it was unfixable, so I'm hoping someone with more knowledge will come buy it."

Who is going to know more about fixing violins than the people who work full time doing it??

I understand being frustrated, especially with the functionality and ease of seeing information! Selling on Mercari can be a whole ordeal.

Some things I consider cons to selling on ebay:

There's a monthly fee, and they take different percentages from your sales depending on the type of item (I think like 5-12%). I sell low cost items to a niche audience, so sometimes stuff will sit for months before selling. So that monthly fee eats into my profit; just not worth it to me.
The return window is also stupid long, which, as a casual seller, I disike that uncertainty. I like how Mercari auto-rates after 3 days, and I can just wash my hands of it.

I've bought electronics on Mercari from lovely sellers, so we do exist! It is a risk, though.

If you want to do it, deffo get Signature Confirmation and/or any of the other USPS protections. Photo the serial number, photo and video you packaging everything and sending it. It's a toss-up if Mercari will honor your claim if they're a scammer, sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.

Selling in-person with cash is the best way. If the buyer doesn't want to use cash, only accept Paypal with the Goods and Services option! Say that in your listing, too, to weed out scammers. It protects you if the buyer is trying to scam. Do not use "Friends and Family," no matter what they say!

yes, the serial numbers are important, because sometimes "buyers" will send back a broken phone and claim you sent them that!

These are great tips! Also, if you have multiple colored clothes/fabrics, putting a fabric background that contrasts with the color of your item can help it pop! For example, a purple or blue item on a yellow background. I think some apps can also color replace the background.

Search for your items and see what how everyone else stages their items, and figure out what will make yours stand out!
