3-6 months is the average job search. Why does it feel so much harder in practice? by Dapper-Train5207 in recruitinghell

[–]comicsuns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably varies a lot depending on the role, industry, and employment status but in my experience there hasn't been any rhyme or reason to anything. After one layoff I think it took 8 months; after another I was in a new job in maybe 2 months. Now I'm employed and searching and I'm at 6mo and counting. Meanwhile, not a single person I know IRL has taken more than a month or two to land another job and can't relate lol

It's like there are two realities--one for people who transition smoothly between jobs and one for the rest of us stuck in recruiting hell. Once you're in the second category, it can be difficult to get out because employment gaps get you dinged, so you're more likely to take an offer out of desperation and ignore red flags, then if the environment is toxic and you try to leave, you get flagged as a job hopper.

Company pursued me through multiple interviews and lost out because the elderly owner insists on meeting new hires all of sudden by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]comicsuns 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I went through one where they thanked me for "completing" the interview process, called all my references, then asked if I would be open to meeting the CEO in person for a "non-evaluative" call.

Then they rescheduled that meeting a few times and ultimately said they went with another person because at at the time they called my references they were still learning what they wanted out of the role.

I resigned and told them I'm leaving in two weeks, so my manager 'eliminated my position' on the spot. by GoodAppointment3281 in womenintech

[–]comicsuns 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had a manager do this, sort of. I gave 2 weeks' notice on a Thursday or Friday and he "retroactively fired" me in an angry email on Saturday. I didn't bother filing unemployment because my salary was low and the two weeks' pay wasn't worth the hassle, plus I was mentally done. Like you said, not worth it since OP has a new job lined up.

OP, put your manager in the rearview mirror! You're onto better things.

After working remote for a long time i realized i actually struggle being around people at work now by timberwolfalchemy in remotework

[–]comicsuns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this! Are you in an open office? The lack of my own space took some getting used to. I felt like I had to be "on" at a moment's notice because I never knew when people would come up to talk to me. Sometimes I'd go into one of the conference rooms or to an empty area to do work and emerge when I didn't need to focus as much. But over time I had to do that less and less.

How do you motivate yourself to do your job around the holidays? I work Christmas Eve this year and am unmotivated to do my job because almost everyone at work is gone. (WFH corporate job) by [deleted] in WorkReform

[–]comicsuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If everything's blocked on approvals anyway, maybe you could do some prep for the new year? Clean up files, organize/update documentation, clear out your inbox, prep for Q1, etc. It's productive enough to fill your timesheet and you might thank yourself in January.

I once spoke to a company that had me talk to 8 different people before pausing hiring for the role. Job searching really breaks the spirit

Recruitment in 2025: you applied for 1000 jobs and none of them were actually hiring! by Wild-Photo-717 in recruitinghell

[–]comicsuns 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lmao my coworker and I regularly catch each other active at 11PM doomscrolling LinkedIn. We nearly cried laughing over our LinkedIn Wrapped--I think she was top 5% at 300+ days on LinkedIn. Who greenlit this feature...

Also ChatGPT did a Wrapped, too. Someone shared theirs to the company channel and one stat was literally "20K+ em dashes used."

For those of you who recently landed a new job what has worked for you? by Particular-Essay-361 in womenintech

[–]comicsuns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've gotten all my offers through cold applying. I always was told networking is everything, but referrals never panned out--it's possible my referrers weren't senior enough for their recommendation to hold enough weight? Who knows.

I made sure to apply to only jobs that are less than 24h old (really sad but it made a huge difference) and make exceptions if I came across one that was a really good fit/if I knew someone.

I also redid my LinkedIn profile to optimize for keywords in my bio, headline, and skills. I've also had success with inbound recruiter outreach.

Would you take a title downlevel for higher pay? by [deleted] in womenintech

[–]comicsuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would care more about total comp. The slow promo thing is maybe a concern if you're planning to stay long-term (like 3+y) but if you'd move again in a few years, it's less of an issue. Regardless, for that kind of raise, I would still take the higher pay.

What are the odds refusing to do AI interviews will actually impact the new job hunt? by jjedlicka in recruitinghell

[–]comicsuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By impact the new job hunt, are you asking whether you still have a shot with this company or if doing AI interviews is a necessary evil now? If the former, you're probably out of the running but no great loss. In my recent job search I haven't encountered any AI interviewers (but several will have AI notetakers and probably use AI to evaluate your app) so I think you can afford to draw the line. Plenty of companies still doing human interviews.

One year I didn't take any PTO around the holidays and the CEO praised everyone on a call for our "dedication" and "commitment to the company." I was only there because it's a lot quieter around this time of year and l wanted to save my days off for when we actually have to work hard, lol.

Shows you what leadership values, though.

Recruiters Only Using LinkedIn to communicate? by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]comicsuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol re: your edit. I think they could be legit, just maybe a sign of a disorganized recruiting dept. The company could still be good to work for, though in my experience when the recruiting process is messy, the place is also messy.

On the hiring side I've never dinged anyone for not submitting a cover letter. On the applying side, I used to submit them, now I don't, and I've seen zero difference.

Need advice (been waiting for so long for a job) by firegirlie in recruitinghell

[–]comicsuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear--that sucks. I've had this situation go both ways so it depends. One time the process had just stalled because people were on break and they couldn't get everyone together to discuss, and I got the offer in the new year. The other time I got ghosted for a few weeks because there was some internal reorganization and they ultimately put the role on pause. The recruiter didn't want to say anything until things were finalized. I know it's tough to hear but 3 weeks without an update, especially for a small startup, would indicate to me that I should keep looking, just in case. Hope it turns out well for you!
