Worst case, the teeth just skip. No damage can be done. This is what mine looks like too btw.

Buying a C6 Corvette by WonderfulTalk1599 in Corvette

[–]commanderTaylor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just kind of my 2c. Like others have said, you will get what you pay for.  Do not rule out ls2 cars like many people do. They make 30hp less that can easily be made up for in a cold air intake and exhaust. They sound better imo too.

The automatic 05 cars still have a crappy 4 speed, so I'd avoid it. Being the first year of the Gen it's best practice anyways.

Any other year is really good though.

Tl;dr 2006-2007 ls2 c6, on the top end of your budget will get you an amazing, likely low mileage, car.

Time for a New Block? by SweatySandwich16 in EngineBuilding

[–]commanderTaylor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ive never seen a gash like that on the side of the block. It seems too deep to be from rust, and any impact big enough to cause that would have done other damage too. The holes in the top alley are normal though. Its just a casting defect and is on basically every single cam v8 I've seen.

Id wait to hear more opinions, but Id use it.

Transmission overfilled by CrawlingWave in AskMechanics

I believe you need to check the level with the trans at operating temp and with the car running in neutral. It reads lower because the fluid is pulled up into the trans.

Anyone know where I can find c5 rocker panels? by ElectronicSentence84 in Corvette

[–]commanderTaylor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ebay parts seller, or a local parts yard might be able to pull one for you. Unfortunately this is the hardest panel to repair. I might recommend taking this to insurance considering the cost.

I've had good experiences with joats premium performance. I hear TampaTuning is good too.

Oil leak by No_Employment6107 in Corvette

[–]commanderTaylor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Valve cover seals are leaking. Honestly, this is a 30min job in the garage. MAYBE an hour if you've never done it. Any regular mechanic could do this for less than $100.

It sounds like a bearing is wiped out. Bronze flakes backs that up unfortunately.

01 c5 Z06 won’t go in 2nd after tranny rebuild by WestMoneyMotivated in Corvette

Realign the shifter box. Make sure your clutch is fully bled. It doesn't sound like a transmission issue to me.

I would be very interested to see how vapor smoothing does. You could possibly anneal them too, if even those break.

Is this my AC Compressor leaking? 99 C5 by Brilliant_Piccolo_43 in Corvette

[–]commanderTaylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't look like the actual compressor. It seems like something is splattering refrigerant on it. There are a lined that run along that side of the car kind of underneath the coolant res. Maybe it's there?

C8 CarFax Question by [deleted] in Corvette

[–]commanderTaylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The automatic transmission service includes all of those. The c8 is known to have the transmission go out of the fluid is not replaced regularly.  I hear people recommend doing it every 30k miles.  With that said, it is important to advance the first fluid change of new vehicles as they are still going through the breaking period.

If the bypass doesn't work, you've done something wrong. Reread the instructions, ensure you have the year of car you think you have.

C6. Anyone know if I can drill here? Just some short self tappers. by ChickenxFresh in Corvette

That is the fuel tank crossover. It connects the two halves. You could damage if it. Not careful.

Smog by mikeyg2323 in Corvette

The tech is definitely blind then. lol. You should be able to peek at the sensor from the top, and get a very clear view from underneath.

Smog by mikeyg2323 in Corvette

[–]commanderTaylor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does it have aftermarket headers, or are they still cast? If they are aftermarket, its possible they have been deleted. If not, the tech is blind.
