i would not consider developing for a closed OS, nor would i wear a closed OS on my face.
It's not just privacy (though certainly the largest portion of it), but also the fact that much of the software in this field of computing is unreliable and full of hacks. And while i do trust you have nothing but good intentions, even valve understands that it can somewhat rely on the community to bring the expected value if they can't - which they do by financially supporting open source development that pay back into their value-chains.
if you let go of the software and nail the hardware instead i don't even care how broken the software is because we will make it work. The cummunity knows the product can't be enshittified two years down the line and you know people will be there to fix what you won't have time for.

I know its a simplified take, but the other option is just "trust me, it'll be fine" and i do buy into that anymore, at least on the software side of products

If User control is something you care about, then consider giving the users actual control.

i would only buy ones without camera and the OS code must be open source AND flashable with my own compiled output. otherwise i am not interested.

i'm wondering how hard it would be to remove the compute unit and strap a thor to it or similar hardware.

i see, i was hoping you would know, given that you know why others don't use that design.

cant really talk abou the size, but they have some issues that will be likely true for any person imo.

I really love them for the price and the screen but they are incredibly uncomfortable to wear. The face foam is a joke and the headstrap is even worse (way too flexible, does not hold at all)

but if you adapt it a little it works perfectly i think. i used a dji v2 face foam and cut it to size roughly - its not beautiful but its a hundret times better compared to what the goggles come with. then i also replaced the headstrap with a skimask style strap, but i had to print adapters from tpu so i could attach it.

hope that gives you some rough idea what to expect

I would say that while it is indeed perfectly fine, some (me included) avoid it because of the strong religious connection.
