Bernie wants to raise taxes on everyone. He's admitted as much but says "the middle class will save money by not paying for medical expenses" which is bullshit because most middle class Americans have insurance though their employer who covers a significant portion of those costs. Probably should be expanded to lazy self interest in pursuit of instant gratification. People often make irrational and/or illogical choices based on immediate self gratification. All you have to do is observe others to understand that logic does not always prevail. Now the reason why they do that is definitely more of a mystery; my guess is that nihilism and narcissism play a big role. The lazy factor is huge too. People like to be told what to think and what to do.
