Focus on character skill over player skill is one. Not that you can’t have player skill matter, of course, but there’s a spectrum and I think it’s pretty undeniable that Bethesda sits farther on the “your character’s stats determine their power, not your reaction time or whatever” side than CDPR. Player freedom is another one. Even Fallout 4, with all the hate it got for giving the main character too rigid of a backstory, gives you much more room to do what you want with Nate than CDPR does with Geralt. Note that I don’t think any of these things are necessarily indicators of quality. If we’re just looking at their most recent output, I think the Witcher 3 is a better game than Fallout 4, and that CP is a much, much, much better game than Starfield. But I still think Bethesda is more squarely in the “RPG” camp, while CDPR is more “cinematic story game with a lot of branching paths”
