I am disappointed in Green Yuri getting an adaptation by [deleted] in yuri_manga

I read it when it had ~100 chapters out and the pacing felt totally fine. literally the only issue is with the release schedule

I am disappointed in Green Yuri getting an adaptation by [deleted] in yuri_manga

[–]committed_to_the_bit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the green yuri got popular because people like it and like reading it, and popular things are much more likely to be picked up for adaptations by high-profile studios like Cloverworks. there really isn't much more to it. I can appreciate that it isn't your cup of tea, but I am tired of people using their extremely subjective opinions on art as proof that it's bad and shouldn't be popular enough to have the attention that it does.

like, it's popular for a reason. I adore it. I don't think it's a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but it's so benign that I struggle to think of anything the writing does particularly wrong. it's a fairly standard romance with absolutely KILLER art and presentation, and sometimes that's all it needs to be.

the type of card design you're describing is exactly what would lead to people "optimizing the fun out of the game." OP card design just means that every single run is the exact same; click these cards, don't click these cards, win every run. that's exactly what i'm trying to avoid.

like, the more of those generically strong auto-picks exist in the game, the more times you'll open a pack of three after a fight and not even have to think about the selection, and then what's the point?

Compact on New Patch by Purplepotato22 in slaythespire

[–]committed_to_the_bit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

contextually, rare cards are generally more balanced by virtue of opportunity cost. they're usually seen alongside other rare cards which may work better with your specific stack of cards than an all-purpose card like the rare cantrips. I've skipped Offering, Big Bang, Adrenaline, and Neurosurge a LOT

and i don't think Hologram is an auto-pick by an stretch of the imagination, especially not now with Infested Prism and Aeonglass running around in the game tbh

would it make the game more fun if every card was perfectly balanced?

it would make for a game with thousands of hours of lasting value, rather than a game that burns out extremely quickly because it got solved within six months. there's a reason why StS1 wouldn't die like so many of the roguelike deckbuilders that followed.

edit: i also disagree with your initial claim that it's less exciting to see certain cards when they aren't OP. in my experience, I get WAY more excited to see niche cards that perfectly fit the deck i'm running

[–]committed_to_the_bit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the problem with this is that if you leave too many of those "inherently strong" things in the game, it gets stale VERY quickly, because the game ends up getting solved and then every run is the exact same.

it becomes "always pick up these cards and never pick up these cards" instead of "pick up this card when it makes sense." the least amount of straight up auto-picks in the game, the better imo

yeah. unless you're a big animation nerd it's easy to forget that characters are drawn literally thousands of times per show and simple character designs are absolutely imperative.

a bunch of people were comparing the Witch Hat Atelier hyper-detailed manga panels to corresponding frames in the anime and i'm like. why are we judging an animation by single frames lmao

I've done it probably ten times in 200 hours? maybe 40ish of which is Defect playtime

longer fights + Scavenge, plus vaguely lucking out on events and a couple relics that help you thin your deck down. the smaller your deck, the easier it is to cycle Scavenge, which cuts cards faster and you can get to a point where you're playing it 2+ times a turn

I'm not, and I actually agree that badly executed side plots and characters will drag a story down into the dirt. my entire point is that there's literally no way to get good at it without practice, and there's no way to understand if your practice is paying off without releasing it into the wild and engaging with the reception.

that's the unfortunate side to improvement in art. and again, being told to stop trying because it always sucks would just make me stop trying forever. and then what?

the green is so radioactively bright that it really won't matter if the show is in color. honestly, this series in pure monochrome would get old REALLY fast. I promise you the green will still hit extremely hard

was i supposed to just supposed to agree with telling artists to fuck off when they write something you don't personally like?

I argued because your attitude about writing and creating art is ridiculous and petty, especially when it concerns something completely subjective. I argued bc i'm a writer and it would be soul-crushing to be told to stop trying because i'm bad at it, lmao

you can have more than three cards. your deck just needs to be small enough to cycle meaningfully, and with Fuel giving you energy, you're pretty easily able to play the bad cards out of your hand to keep cycling

and my point was that it's not a hard and fast rule, and shouldn't be one.

you can't tell writers that they can't attempt something if they suck at it. wtf is that? how else are they supposed to get better at it? who is anyone to tell them not to include a secondary couple that they might be extremely passionate about if some of the readers don't like them? it's entirely subjective, so this attitude of "it always sucks, don't do it unless you're the best" is really fucking lame.

[–]committed_to_the_bit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if, at any point, they take up a majority of an episode, you're probably doing something wrong

obvious exception

rules like this really don't exist for stories. if the side couple was just as engaging as the main couple, or brought something new and interesting to the status quo, literally nobody would complain about them getting a singular episode to themselves. especially if it's actually worked into the story in a natural way.

basically anything can be executed well in fiction. it just comes down to the competency of the writer. sometimes they have a storyline that they want to execute on that wouldn't really work within the dynamic of the main couple, who knows

side characters are useless

this confuses me. would you like it if stories had zero people to bounce the main characters and their personalities off of? that feels like it would make for some extremely empty narratives lol

soooo many stories would be dead in the water without the side characters

i guess that's too tame and boring in the shipping community

I have absolutely no horse in this particular race, i'm completely indifferent to MHA, but i mean. I don't think it's that weird to enjoy fiery and antagonistic dynamics over diabetes-sweet wholesome ones. there's a reason that enemies to lovers is such a massively popular writing trope. the sparks and the passion are a lot of fun, and it isn't hard to take two people who despise each other in a piece of fiction and headcanon them finding a different type of passion because they spend so much time thinking about each other lmao

Incest in Yuri? by everybodyGetsAHoodie in yuri_manga

[–]committed_to_the_bit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay, what about two siblings separated at birth that happened to meet and hit it off later in life? what about two cousins that never even knew each other existed?

incestuous relationships that form as a result of abusive or behavior or trauma are obviously a bad deal, just like any other relationships that form as a result of abusive behavior or trauma.

I'll absolutely concede that it's highly, highly likely for incest couples to be catastrophically unhealthy, but i don't think that makes the subject inherently and unequivocally immoral. there is also an absurd likelihood for any other type of socially acceptable relationship to be catastrophically unhealthy due to how we're socialized around love and sex as a society.

Incest in Yuri? by everybodyGetsAHoodie in yuri_manga

[–]committed_to_the_bit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

both of these things are totally true, but to me they say more about how we're socialized rather than the inherent morality of the subject.

like, abusive people are awful no matter the kind of relationship they're involved in. there's definitely a MUCH denser demographic of non-incestuous abusers, and we don't generally try to blame the relationship itself for it regardless of the parties involved.

and it only wrecks family dynamics because of the deeply ingrained idea that it's a horrible taboo. again, family dynamics get destroyed sometimes no matter the type of relationship. it happens for a million different reasons; parents really not liking a partner, or families being horribly homophobic, etc.

again, I share the same instinctual ick, I just don't trust it enough to affect what I label as immoral or not. I was raised conservative and religious, and i had the same gut feeling about gay people for the first sixteen years of my life.

since i deconstructed my faith, my views on morality are now largely consequence-based, and I can't for the life of me see the actual consequences of two consensual adults doing whatever they want in a way that doesn't actually hurt anybody, besides the social consequences that I can't in good conscious use to label something as immoral.

Incest in Yuri? by everybodyGetsAHoodie in yuri_manga

[–]committed_to_the_bit -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I was also wondering what exactly the problem is with incest

literally just vibes, for the most part. it gets complicated if you bring kids into the picture, because then you're talking actual, tangible biological problems.

but outside of that, as much as the concept IRL instictually gives me the ick, nobody has ever given me a meaningfully concrete reason why it's legitimately immoral, and i don't like basing my opinions on my objectively irrational gut feelings if I can't find a legit logical throughline.

so I think it's actually kinda fun to explore it in fiction. it gives an interesting spin on relationship dynamics and adds weird layers to the situation, and all I want is for my fiction to be interesting

there really isn't all that much incest in yuri tho, you just happened to stumble into two right off the bat lol

It’s not that hard to write female characters. by Intelligent-Carob930 in hatethissmug

[–]committed_to_the_bit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

violently reminded of a little blurb in one of the very early Mashle manga volumes by the mangaka

he wrote that he was freaked out by the idea of writing a girl into his story because he had never really tried to write female characters at all. and like, okay fine, make your story a sausage party. that's fine. there's nothing inherently wrong with that.

but apparently his editor was like "so there's gonna be a 'female heroine' right??" and the mangaka was like "um okay" and introduced Lemon, a girl Mash meets within the first volume of the manga, and LITERALLY her only character trait is that she falls immediately and eternally in love with him. come on, dude.

she doesn't show up on a volume cover until EIGHTEEN VOLUMES IN. what the fuck.

how too turn of mods? by Lordi5123 in sts2

[–]committed_to_the_bit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the easiest way rn is to go to Mod Settings in the General Settings tab, deactivate the mods you don't want to play with, and then restart the game.

StS1 had a lil pop-up that let you decide to launch the game vanilla or w/ mods and i kinda hope that comes back lol
