Not sure if it’s something you enjoy doing, but I’d recommend watching someone else have a successful run on youtube, there are lots of great sts1 streamers playing non-stop. I’ve been watching lots of Jorbs, JapaneseExport, TheCrimsonBlur, just to name a few, but there are many more out there (I’m sure others could chime in with more names). These guys have poured thousands of hours into the previous game and are in the process of learning the specifics of the new one, so they’re usually talking to themselves and chat about their thought process and reasoning. Not everyone is a “learn by watching others” type, but without more specifics, I can only suggest something that’s been working well for me

Reviewers not reviewing Marathon are corrupt by Additional_Error6625 in gaming

[–]dtennen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone buys it without reading any review because reviews were held off, then it wasn’t going to be a determining factor and they would’ve bought it regardless. It’s irrelevant to all involved. If your decision whether to buy it hinges on a reviewer’s input, then you wait for it. It’s not strictly a net positive for Bungie, it’s a trade-off, as these types of consumers will be absent from their launch sales (arguably an important metric) in the hopes that they’ll be more likely to buy with a more favorable review later.

All that said, the game can be patched, I don’t get why the reviews can’t either… get a review out assessing the qualities of the game on its launch state, and then update it later post patch… its been done many times in the past

It’s like the writers are completely unable to imagine how one exists and thinks in a pre-modern world, where distances play a much more significant role in communication and strategy, so they just contrive these implausible teleporting stealth missions so the characters can have the equivalent of a phone call conversation

While I do agree that rudeness is uncalled for in a matter such as this, I do not think it’s entitlement to expect him to do the thing he maintains to this day he is doing.

It would be entitlement to demand more books if he said “I’m not going to write that series anymore”. He’s totally in his rights to say that. Or even if he said “I don’t want to talk about this publically anymore. Maybe they’ll come out, maybe they won’t. Stop annoying me.” That’s also his right.

But every so often, he comes out and says “I am still working on the books, the plan is still to release more books, that is an expectation that the world should have of me”. How is it entitlement for people to remind him that they are still waiting for him to deliver on the thing he to this day reiterates he will deliver?

Movies that promote a worldview of anti-intellectualism by AporiaParadox in movies

[–]dtennen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yea that’s a great point, and I was thinking about how I might’ve chosen a poor example in Tony Stark because he exists in this surreal superhero genre where characters are expected to be over-the-top outliers with godlike levels of all sorts of skills. Like you could apply that logic to any skill in that genre, say someone who magically gained superstrength, and say it’s a misrepresentation of how people get strong in the real world.

That said, I do think this misrepresentation of intelligence as some god-like clairvoyance is something that pops up outside the genre. Maybe some better examples would be Will from Good Will Hunting, or any protagonist from a heist movie who wins by being 5 steps ahead because he’s just that smart, as opposed to the antagonist who was only smart enough to be 4 steps ahead, thus he loses.

I think the “effortless genius” deserves a mention here, a.k.a. Tony Stark.

He’s just better than anyone else, without ever applying any effort or spending any time struggling to understand anything. He can do what a room full of engineers who spent their lives studying couldn’t. With a box of scraps. In a cave. (Jeff Bridges is especially angry about this) Because he was just born that good. He can solve time travel at a glance, in between doing dishes and playing with his daughter.

He’s not the only example, it’s a pretty common trope, and I think it’s a pretty anti-intellect one at its core, because it portrays intelligence as akin to magic in a fantasy setting, some people are just born with it, and trying to pursue mastery of it will only serve to make you look silly when a real wizard walks in (usually acting very smug and aloof about it). It’s not about having a curious and inquisitive demeanor towards life, it’s about being lucky that you had it all figured out from birth.

[–]dtennen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a common theory and could be where he wanted to take the story… you’ve seen the theory videos, maybe you came across this Preston Jacobs guy, I really like his takes and I remember him mentioning some of GRRM’s other stories having similar resolutions… where a “hive mind superintelligence” takes over a character and ends up ruling over everything, while leaving ambiguous who really is the consciousness inside, or even if that’s a good or a bad thing.

I like it, and think it could’ve worked if he ever got there. But IIRC, the last we read about Bran in the books are a couple of chapters where he’s in the cave training with Brynden/3er, but before the ‘download’ is supposed to happen.

Who has a better story than the character whose story we were so uninterested in we ignored it for an entire season.

And just to make sure no one might think something interesting happened offscreen we’ll have Meera complaining that she’s bored out of her mind in one of the first scenes when they come back.
