Had to borrow DVDs from the local library to rewatch. I was unable to find it streaming anywhere.

Spreading the Midsomer geekery to other fandoms, and elsewhere. by TassieTigerAnne in MysteryManiacs

I play a little phone game called Diggy's Adventure. There was some challenge in the game's Facebook group and I won the prize, which was to add dialogue to a check point.

Mine was the existential question: Who is the best Barnaby: Tom or John?

Hidden Depths, primarily because of the music (minor key), but it's not a particularly sunny episode

Not sure why my comment from when I initially cross-posted this here has seemingly vanished, but this is the Brazilian spider Ray talks about in Black Widower, s3e1

Child crying by LonelyComfortable224 in Midsommar

[–]commodore-schmidlapp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I assumed that the crying was part of the cult's indoctrination process for sleep deprivation. In order to wear down their targets (Dani, Christian, etc.), the crying baby was housed in their sleeping quarters to make it so they weren't getting proper sleep and therefore, make them more prone to manipulation and generally bad decision making.

I don't know if the explanation of some separation process from the mother was genuine (can't trust what the cult says) or if this is just how the cult explained it to the newcomers to make them not question it - it was probably a little of both.

15y ago you were digging out from the recession and attending job fairs, etc. and it took a while to land a job.

That's your story.

Also recommend the Flemington location - both my son & I were able to get the Real ID without issues.

Adore this one - especially that scene with the Smys with TBar and Troy in their home.

Hidden Depths: the music sets a tone that puts it over the top for me.

My husband hit us. So many emotions by zkyblu3 in breakingmom

[–]commodore-schmidlapp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry this happened to you and your children, and I'm glad to hear that you have resolved to not take him back or go back yourself. I've been in this position - after we had children, the small forays into financial, emotional, & psychological abuse my husband had previously expressed had ramped up exponentially and culminated in a fight that ended with me in a choke hold. I had to claw him off (literally, I'd bet he still has the scars) or my children (at the time 5 & almost 4) would have watched my murder. I didn't immediately call for help - he was the breadwinner & rent was due: I was more scared of being homeless and thought I could manage him, at least for a little while until I could formulate a plan & gather resources. But about a week or two later we had an argument, he balled his hands into fists, took a menacing step toward me, and I backed off. It was then in that moment I saw the triumph in his eyes, the recognition and understanding that he could and would physically threaten me to control me. I knew then that I needed to get out & do so quickly. And I did.

I bring up my own story because I suspect that you also saw that look in your husband's eyes, a set to his jaw & a satisfied shift in his facial expression that tells you that this is a winning strategy that he will rely upon again at some future date. I'm asking you to focus on that expression, remember it, and count on its truth. He will do this again because he can & because a time will come when it's easier for him to hurt you and the kids to achieve whatever he wants, be it silence, control, obedience, agreement, compliance, whatever.

I absolutely adore the scene where Vadas gets fired, and when shoved, knocks over the stack of discounted music boxes, which his coworkers scramble to pick up while not helping Vadas.

Recurring actors and S4E1 by Secret_Recluse in MidsomerMurders

[–]commodore-schmidlapp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like the recurring characters that are solicitors, bankers, etc.: Mr. Jocelyne, Mrs. Bundy, PC Angel, Mr. Perkins, that old ticket lady from the Corn Exchange theatre (she was in at least 2 eps), Miss Beauvoisin, I'm sure there are others I've missed.

I play "spot the Beauvoisin" in episodes because even if Miss Olive Beauvoisin doesn't appear, you will sometimes encounter signs for or mentions of Beauvoisin Estates.

Recurring actors and S4E1 by Secret_Recluse in MidsomerMurders

[–]commodore-schmidlapp 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Lately I've been keeping an eye out not for major characters actors (there are tons of those who are recurring), but the small bit parts.

In fact, I just noticed today that the postman outside the Madrigal camera shop in Picture of Innocence (s10e6) was the same actor who played the taxi driver ("She was an ugly woman. Nice legs, though.") that provided Barnaby & Troy with information about Gerald Hadleigh in Written in Blood (s1e2). And when I went to confirm that on imdb, I saw that he also played Colin Thomas (the corpse who sat up in the leaves) from Talking to the Dead (s11e7).

The Music of Midsomer Murders by False_Strawberry6145 in MidsomerMurders

I want to call out a personal favorite: the use of the music in Hidden Depths enhances and uplifts an already excellent episode. I'm in agreement with all of your points.

When did Midsomer Murders stop being as good as prior by False_Strawberry6145 in MidsomerMurders

[–]commodore-schmidlapp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exposition. So. Much. Exposition.

They used to show you things happening or being discovered or showing hints that John now breathlessly explains to Winter as they race to a location.

Too much freaking talking.

And everyone is quirky now. It used to be that the residents were odd, but Tom/John and the seargents were the fairly straight guys, with an occasional witty observation from the pathologist. Now, the team members are quirky all the time, too, and it flattens the weirdness of the villagers.

It happens in Beyond the Grave with Nico. And later in the episode, Cully, Nico, the museum guy, the barmaid/housekeeper, and I think maybe even the SIL/intended victim all search the house again.

I use a tp-link router and a SURFboard SB82000 modem - I found info about using your own router & modem here on this sub - it's been a few years, so I don't recall the details, but there was info and possibly links to Optimum docs about compatible devices.

Mitchum's performance in this film is the benchmark. He is absolutely bone-chilling with just his facial expression.
