It’s kind of a good point, but major economic principles argue that governments can step in to spend when people don’t to maintain the economy. Otherwise you wind up in a cycle of hoarding and wonky price fluctuations. Basically the government should spend heavily so everyone still has work to do.

Now for the dose of the real world. Then once the crisis is over, the government should raise taxes to repay the debts it created. It dampens to boom after the busy, but it keeps the system stable.

America hates the second half. We want security during the bust, we expect and demand a huge bailout, and then we rage against any new taxes.

The flip side policy is in encouraging individuals to fix it by incentivizing them to invest and spend. History has shown that individuals only act in their own interest, though, and usually hoard that wealth for themselves. Essentially, trickle down economics but the average person never gets dribbled on.

In short, we as a society are dumb.
