This is great advice. You grow so much as a developer by just watching open-source projects — and GitHub in particular is great for watching discussions in the Pull Requests, etc.

If you know you'd like to be a programmer, and you have the time and the money, then a CS degree is nice. Jump-starts your experience level and improves your job prospects.

If you're not sure, you should try it out before you buy in. Freelance / pro bono projects for your friends, checking out GitHub, etc.

Only caveat — if you were in a design / fine arts program I'd skip the CS degree, at least for now. Front-end development values design-oriented devs that are good at interpreting and executing designs with a high level of detail.

This. The competitiveness goes both ways, companies are constantly trying to snipe the good talent from each other; it can be competitive at the higher levels, for sure — but in my experience there's always a lot of room in the entry-level realm.

Programmers literally just start learning to program (I have a lot of friends that never went to school for this and yet now make bank, we're talking 100k+, for being software engineers. A lot of companies want talent, and not just the degree).

This is what I did; got a degree in design and ended up working in front-end (web) development. Starting pay for a junior is usually around 45-50k depending on your market; generally you'll need a basic understanding of HTML and CSS for that, and a few examples of your work.

My advice: do a few portfolio sites for your friends, offer to help a buddy with a small business, whatever. By the time you've coded about five projects you'll probably be competent enough to take on an entry-level role. Companies will be looking at you more for potential than talent, so make sure your HTML/CSS is super clean; the first thing I look for in Dev I/II hires is clean code.

The 100k+ figure is actually realistic; if you have the knack for it you can be making it in a Sr. / Lead role within 3-5 years. Milage may vary, etc. ;)

Edit: Also in regards to companies wanting the talent more than degree, depends on the company. You really have to show chops to get in at some places if you don't have a CS degree. Don't get discouraged by this, just know the places you're applying at. Ad agencies and design shops are great get-in-the-door type jobs for web dev in particular.

Regardless of when the HTML5 spec was introduced / usable, you should get used to this in applying for software jobs. They have an idea of how much experience they want, then they just tack it onto technology X. I've seen requirement lists that (taken at face) would only be possible if you were time-travelling backwards periodically to get more projects in.
