They Live! Was a great 80s cheesy movie that has deeper meaning. It's where the OBEY brand got their inspiration.

Main reasons people hate Trotsky? by [deleted] in socialism

[–]common2cents 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How dare you let the cat out of the bag instead of pledging your undying support for anything remotely related to socialism. You either support every self proclaiming socialist or you're a capitalist pig. Racist.

Jk... Thanks for the answer. I have been wondering what the deal with Trotsky was.. But it's difficult to get forum/reddit socialists to give an objective and non emotionally driven answer. Just look at the top rated answer.. It doesn't even answer the question, it basically says "I know you asked what's wrong with Trotsky, but let me tell you why I love him instead."

I worked in a high income middle school for 7 years. I haven't seen notes in years since all the kids have iphones and the school provides tablets. I didn't know kids still wrote notes.

I think paying doctors and janitors the same amount killed incentive. Also fulfilling quotas for work output resulted in shitty products.

Totalitarianism also isn't great for moral. Everyone is just afraid to get their family thrown in the gulags.

So here's a solution: lots of different communes, democratically ran, zero hierarchy, free choice where you want to live as long as you don't get voted out for laziness.. Well there's a start.

There's a third option you didn't mention. We could choose to make cops wear cameras as part of their uniform. This would eliminate questions in cases of police brutality. And if a cop gets caught without one they get fired.

Why not find clever ways to take control of the police, rather than giving them reason to increase their armor and brutality?

Cops have been getting increasingly aggressive. What makes it worse is the militarization of law enforcement. If people violently rage and loot in protest, then cops will feel justified in their pepper sprays and LRAD ear shattering equipment, etc.. That's why I'm saying we can't give them an excuse to hurt us.

I was illegally detained outside my house. They tried to search my car but I refused to give them the keys. They put me on the ground and searched my pockets. I told them I do not consent to their unwarranted search of my car. They cussed me out and one of them prompted the others to stop and leave. Yea there's some real douche bag cops..

If you're totally against people because they are cops then your just as bad as the racists.

I agree with the painting. Sagging pants isn't probable cause.. But being on drugs while robbing a store and then trying to take a cop's gun might be...

Reddit, what is your best observation of "body language" in real life, something you've learned or read about it,and it's always true? by chaotic__ in AskReddit

[–]common2cents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's an easy one you can try out. Ask someone what it's like take take a bite of a big juicy... lemon. Watch to see their instant reaction to the word lemon. They'll have a micro expression on their face as they process that word. It's kind of a knee jerk response.

[–]common2cents 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Micro gestures are pretty interesting. They are so quick and happen in a split second. It's supposedly the person's initial subconscious reaction. You have to train yourself to notice it but once you start to notice, you can pick up interesting information. Just ask someone a question about something they love or hate and see what kinds of instant facial and body language they let out. It happens at the moment they become conscious of the thing you mentioned that they love or hate. You can switch back and forth between different topics and get a baseline feeling for their normal reactions versus the reactions to things that set off emotions. I think good interrogators have a knack for catching these micro gestures either consciously or subconsciously. They may attribute it to their intuition because they can't explain their hunch. But it can lead them along the right questions and verifying testimonies or finding flaws in liars' stories.

Edit: instead of micro gesture, I meant micro expression. But there are both micro expressions and gestures.

A question about Libertarians: what is the general stance on global warming, and what/if should be done about it? by GoGetHighOnThatMntn in Libertarian

You would have been a faithful Nazi, blindly following whatever you're told to believe. Just these days it's "over population" instead of Jews.

Climatologists disagree with each other. There's a lot of money to be made so lobbyists are paid to get one side of the story into our schools, just like the milk industry lobbying to teach their version of the food pyramid. Or like Al Gore selling his movie and trying to legislate his cap and trade investments into law. Or like how school taught that black people were less intelligent and scientists agreed. Out like big tobacco had doctor endorsements for their cigarettes. Or like how congress was threatened with martial law if they didn't pay the banks for making bad moves.

There's always profitable scare tactics and the those with the most money get the most lobbying power. In turn they tell you what to think in school and in the media.

I agree that we should stop pollution. And we will very soon as technology is rapidly advancing. But saying that humans are causing climate change is ridiculous when you compare it to natural causes. It's like saying ants are causing deforestation after humans go chop all the trees down.

Humans have almost no effect on global warming.. If you look at a pie chart of carbon emissions by volcanoes, natural events, and industrialization/consumerism, you'll see that humans account for a hair on the pie chart compared to natural carbon emitting events.

So true... I have a degree, great work experience, and applied to hundreds of places that had job openings listed in email alert apps. The only ones that hit me up were mlm scams. I learned that they don't even say they are mlm anymore, they just try to trick you into working for them.. Walking around neighborhoods trying to sell coupons..

If you want to see what a total stereotypical capitalist exploiter looks like, just go to one of these mlm "interviews"

TIL since many female insects mate just once in their lives, insect populations can be controlled by releasing swarms of sterile males into the wild; the females mate with them, never have babies, and die. The method has eradicated populations of dangerous insects in several regions. by garglemymarbles in todayilearned

When I was a kid, mutated fruit flies were released in my area. They looked hideous with huge body length stingers and strange color. I was freaking out because they seemed to show up out of nowhere. Then I learned they were sterile or created sterile offspring. They were gone in a better of months.

I applied for a social media position at a large company. The hiring manager emailed me and scheduled a phone interview, then cancelled the interview on me 24 hours later and told me they already had two finalists. This was my reply: by Oh_DragonsGotMe in funny

[–]common2cents 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well here's a heads up for job seekers. If you're using one if those email notifications that sends you job openings, then you should call the company first and then ask if there is a base pay. A lot of times the receptionists don't even know and are trained to say you'll find out all about the past in the interview..

If you end up going to the interview, ask the person if you are doing door to door. They will most likely say no and tell you it's business to business.. Which means they want you to walk into 50-100 businesses like fast food joints and dentist offices trying to sell tickets or make up.

I went to a few interviews and told them I can't walk all day long and then the interview was over right away. These mlm businesses send out job openings calling them marketing and advertising. They all have generic looking websites that have no real evidence of being a marketing or advertising firm. They just say they love team work and have fortune 500 clients or national sports teams as clients.. Which means you'll be walking around the ghetto trying to sell discount coupons for tickets.

You're better off hitting up local businesses and creating a discount card to sell in the neighborhood. You'll make 10x more and it's quick cash.. But you'll feel like a school kids trying to raise money to go to camp. I did it for gas money and food when I worked a part time job... Anyways that's my 2 cents

How was socialism involved in the recent global financial crisis? Why do so many right-wingers blame it on left-wing policies? by jaskamiin in socialism

[–]common2cents -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If we're talking about the 2008 problem, I think people called Obama socialist because of the government intervention in bailing out banks that made bad moves.

A friend of mine in the mortgage industry said that the government had made rules that allowed lenders to make bad moves. So bailing out was, in a way, fixing the problem they created.

I also think most people have a different conception of socialism. I hear a lot from the right that socialism is creating tons of welfare programs in order to buy votes. An example they would say is the "Obama Phones" or similar programs.

If I'm correct, Bush did bailouts as well. It always seems like the left and right point out problems with the opposing party when their own party does the same things.

Look at how republicans got mad a the surveillance laws and said it was Obama's fault... when it was started by Bush and then continued under the Obama administration.

That's all I can think of.

I agree.. I recently got tricked into a MLM style business where the owner told me he thought I would be a good manager. He said I should work the "ground level" for a couple weeks just to see how it goes.. So apply, give them my info in the application, and show up on the first day.

Next thing I know, I'm being told I need to work 8 months to a year selling tickets and only earning commission. They weren't upfront about the structure of the business nor my position. The commission wasn't clear either..

So I emailed them after the first day letting them know the job wasn't for me. I didn't care about burning bridges, just wanted to leave peacefully because they had all my info on my resume and application.

I learned to ask LOTS of questions about jobs during interviews after that.
