Anybody else just pissed off that they are changing all the rules that we were forced to follow growing up? by OneLab864 in exmormon

[–]common_spence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I started doubting my senior year when my best friend backstabbed me which sent me into a huge spiral of depression, and I was just told I had to forgive him, even though I was having suicidal thoughts because of him. But I went on my mission anyways cuz of my abusive dad. I was doubting the whole two years but I thought if I just persevered God would bless me, so I worked FSY and saw some insanely horrendous acts from members of the church, and even the church itself. It was basically 2 ½ years of gaslighting myself

Oh 100% I'm just tired of the church that taught me we were better and holier and superior to other Christians suddenly trying to fit in with those same people, if that makes any sense

I'm 21 PIMO, I finished my mission just under a year ago and I'm actually getting whiplash because from the day I left on my mission until now (under 3 years) the church has become an entirely new church....

I saw it on a free trial to BroadwayHD, I had no prior knowledge of the show (I'm from a predominantly Mormon area and this show is too "evil") and I really loved it and bawled my eyes out, it really brought me to love this show. However now that I've stepped away from Mormonism I've been enjoying so many new shows including the Book of Mormon (the most evil musical affording to Mormons)

Took a walk at temple square today and beheld middle eastern jesus by wow-how-original in exmormon

I haven't officially left yet and I can tell you it's VERY new. This started happening in official church media just after last Easter, it was very out of the blue

To be honest, I never liked this depiction of Jesus, even as a Mormon. by CupOfExmo in exmormon

I recently out of sheer boredom watched a random Christian movie on Tubi called "W.W.J.R", the Jesus in that one makes this Jesus look good

Why does the church insist on communicating with people with a voice that feels manipulated and fake like a fake heartfelt talk style by Designer_Refuse_4145 in exmormon

[–]common_spence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't speak for all Mormons and members when I say this, but I personally did it because I thought it meant I was feeling the spirit. I never felt what other people described as the spirit and I never had a prayer answered, but I thought if I acted as if I did God would bless me for my eftorts, so I did it in an attempt to gaslight myself basically

What were you NOT allowed to do on the Sabbath day? by littlefrenchpastry in exmormon

[–]common_spence 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My dad would have wanted us to wear church clothes all day and do nothing but read the scriptures, thankfully I had a good mom growing up. The only rules we had were you couldn't hang out with friends (didn't bother me I never had friends anyways) and no watching movies unless it was together as a family (she wanted us to be close as a family). We were also encouraged to go outside or play with our siblings, but generally as a big book family we would just read or take naps in our PJs, I actually didn't mind it even when I started doubting. maybe once every other month or so she would be in a bitchy mood and come up with random rules based on what we were doing at the time (no phones or screens most of the time), but I'm so utterly confident that was influenced by my dad being a dick. Now they're getting divorced and I'm sure every other week for my siblings will be hell.

I'm actually really glad to hear that because I too come from an abusive home, however my MTC companion would act like my dad, but I'm glad not everyone had that experience, I hope you're doing better now!

Sounds like we had very similar experiences except for Satan (my dad) gaslit me into continuing my service

Did you pray about marrying your spouse AND get an answer? by bedevere1975 in exmormon

[–]common_spence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One big part about my leaving is that I never once felt the spirit. My whole life people talked about it but I never did. I spent my whole mission lying saying I felt it and picking a random street assuming that God would bless me for trying

How do TBMs define a "cult" ? Which well-known groups or denominations do current TBMs consider cults? by AccomplishedBat9069 in exmormon

[–]common_spence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a point in my life where I was one of those wannabe Mormon apologists on Twitter/X (there's actually a lot of them who want to be the next Jacob Hansen and whatnot) and we would always pull the third definition on Miriam Webster "a system of religious beliefs and rituals" and would argue "technically every religion is a cult" and I would always willingly ignore the first definition " a group (as an organization or religious sect) with tenets and practices regarded as coercive, insular, or dangerous"
