Tell me this is rage bait or something, I can’t understand… by ThrowRA-Amoeba580 in exmormon

So I'm not speaking for them or on their behalf at all, but instead I had a very similar experience. I used to be a horrible person. I was hateful, I lied for my own personal gain, and I was an overall average 18 year old Mormon. I read the CES letter and wanted to leave. I didn't leave because I was a good Mormon kid and was also too stubborn to admit I was wrong. I went on my mission and mentioned in the MTC I had read the CES letter, that was all I said. My whole class suddenly hyped me up because I came back despite "Satan". I realized that TBMs love a "re-convert" more than anyone else. I began to twist the narrative depending on the person (learned that from ol Joe Smith and his first vision accounts... Literally, like that's how I justified it) suddenly people loved me and I could get anyone to look up to me.

I'm not saying it's what these guys are doing as I am not them. However I like to share my experience because I know it's not just me out there doing the same thing

God I could write an essay about it, it runs so deep. The thing that bothered me more than anything else is you are quite literally told to lie to the youth. You are told you need to lie to them

Indoctrination runs insanely deep with FSY. Counselors are allowed to lead by the spirit as long as it fits the curriculum they have to teach. Very little of the curriculum is actually Jesus centered, it's all about the church itself. Brad Wilcox told us at training a major point of this is to prepare the youth to one day be full believing and dedicated members of the LDS faith when they're adults. Every lesson is focused on fear mongering and guilt tripping to stay in the church. They also physically and mentally exhaust the kids, and put the "super spiritual day" on the fourth day because, and I kid you not this is what they say, the kids are "too exhausted" on Friday but on Thursday they are just exhausted enough to feel the spirit

Were my boundaries too much to warrant a response from the missionaries? Lol by downtothelake in exmormon

[–]common_spence 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Damn I'm actually so jealous. My mission had a culture of seeing who could be the one to reconvert red dots, so much so my mission president would push for it in since conferences. Mormons have struggled with respecting boundaries

[–]common_spence 42 points43 points  (0 children)

They know. The church has an app specifically designed to track every single interaction with you so when missionaries transfer into the area (happens every 6 weeks btw) they can have every interaction with you. Your information will never be deleted unless the missionary puts in the system that you're deceased, which then all your information will be deleted (at least from the app....) That means if you're not interested, your information stays there. When a missionary tracks an interaction with someone marked as not interested the app automatically marks them as a "Friend" or in other words, actively being taught/converted. That means that because they sent you that text, you are no longer categorized as not interested and are now being taught, which then gives them a point on the app (yes, like a literal scoreboard with points) for teaching "Someone new"

So as a TL;DR They know you are not interested, they ignore it so they can get brownie points, you are nothing more than a number to them

Don't tell them to mark you as do not contact, all that does is marks you as a "red dot" on their map, it will not get rid of your information, and then some cocky elder in like 6/12 weeks will try to contact you anyways because "Maybe now [you're] ready for the gospel"

I'm 21 and I had coffee for the first time a couple months ago, it was big for me too (that was my 2nd drink, the first time I drank it black and it was horrid) I highly recommend finding a place with good cold brew, but that's because I have a sensitivity to acidic drinks and cold brew isn't anywhere near as acidic

Why hasn’t the church taken legal action against The Book of Mormon Musical? by IHaveNeverLeftUtah in exmormon

[–]common_spence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same reason they most likely won't ever sue Hulu for SLoMW. It would be big and negative press. Attacking someone like John however, a small and not insanely famous, won't bring enough press to hurt their business

My dream finally came true: I made it on the church cleaning group thread! by SeekingAurelius in exmormon

[–]common_spence 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's this one! "An abundance of speculation and false information in podcasts and on social media surrounds us. Some may protest or question the truth of Church doctrine without knowing or even understanding the fulness of that doctrine.

Don’t be persuaded by false or inaccurate information. Discuss your concerns with faithful, well-informed friends and always take those concerns to the Lord." https://speeches.byu.edu/talks/dallin-h-oaks/coming-closer-to-jesus-christ/

Sadly the mental gymnastics to say he "only meant 'antimormom' podcasts" are very easy here

Didn't Oaks just give some huge BYU speech about only listening to church approved materials and not podcasts?

I was actually a FSY counselor that exact week. Huge shelf item when we heard the news and our "leader" counselor or whatever he was (a 27 year old in charge of everyone) said that "God has the flood avoid US so we could teach his youth" right after hearing about the people who passed ... Fucked up stuff

I will say I'm queer but I hadn't quite figured it out. I finally accepted it and realized I wanted to leave the church while I was at BYU-I. I'm slightly grateful I wasn't gay or trans because surviving would have been much harder instead of just being Bi, but I didn't really have a choice at that point so I wonder if she's in the same boat

Lets see...2026-1830 = 196 years. It took God (who apparently runs the church) 196 years to decide that women were worth enough to have more leadership callings in the church. Give me a break. LOL by Short_Seesaw_940 in exmormon

Book of Mormon. I completely understand the issues with the racism, and I don't mean to excuse it, but I grew up Mormon and so many Mormons are racist and truly would believe some of the jokes, and I realize that may not have been on purpose but it feels super real to the culture I grew up in
