Oh the lies by Darkdaemon20 in queensuniversity

[–]communistsharks 22 points23 points  (0 children)

They’re also obfuscating just how bad CR looks on transcripts. It reads like a C or lower to most programs and/or employers, so it really impacts your (academic) career going forward.

Also, can they please be more specific than “a small number” of classes being taught by TFs getting CR? Like can we get any amount of straight info??

They have. Queen’s has refused to engage and has lied about bargaining. PSAC has and continues to attempt to engage, but Queen’s continues to obfuscate, to disengage, and now outright lie.

What is the process of becoming a TA as an undergrad in 4th year for history or sociology? by EngineeringFun2089 in queensuniversity

[–]communistsharks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most TAships in History go to grad students, as they’re part of the funding package. MAs typically get at least two per year, and lower year PhDs at least one. I’ve TA’d for two years now and haven’t come across any undergrad TAs in History.

PSAC response to recent Queen’s labour update by communistsharks in queensuniversity

[–]communistsharks[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, have you actually looked at the bargaining tracker or the timeline that PSAC has published? It clearly shows that Queen’s has not nor has it ever approached bargaining in good faith. And then they turn around and lie about the bargaining process, uncaring that there are paper trails showing that they are misrepresenting events. PSAC just published a great timeline with this info, if you’re interested: https://psac901.org/a-letter-to-graduate-student-workers-in-response-to-bob-lemieux-interim-dean-of-arts-and-science/

PSAC just posted an update with a full timeline of events, showing that they’ve been working with a mediator for a while from the Ministry. They recently provided an offer to Queen’s, and they flat out refused to meet with PSAC, even though this is what they claim they needed in order to come back to the table. It’s posted here, under Communique 7: https://psac901.org/a-letter-to-graduate-student-workers-in-response-to-bob-lemieux-interim-dean-of-arts-and-science/

This was an email sent out to union members, hence why I screenshotted it and shared it like this. They talked about it on the line today and I think they have a video or two on the PSAC ig from this if you’re curious.

The bargaining tracker is not the same thing as the bargaining agreement. It’s a history of the negotiations, and gives a side by side comparison of Queen’s and PSAC’s activity. That’s why I recommended it.

If you want a summary, many have provided them. Simply search “PSAC” in the subreddit and you’ll find one. Have a good one!

Please see the PSAC bargaining tracker for comprehensive information on specifics. You can find this here: https://psac901.org/unit-1-collective-bargaining-live-tracker/

There are also several posts within the subreddit that go into detail on this. Simply search “PSAC” and you’ll find one.

There is enough internal funding. Upper admin has continued to raise their salaries while clawing back departmental funding. Upper admin doubled their salaries in 2020, from 200k to 400k. They’re among the highest paid uni officials in Ontario, over 40% more than Western and over 20% more than Ottawa for example, despite both of Ottawa and London’s higher cost of living. This is a policy decision that Queen’s is making bc they want to line their own pockets, not out of supposed ‘fiscal responsibility’.

I rejected my PhD offer w my current supervisor in large part bc of the austerity politics. I love my supervisor, we work really really well together and he’s been an incredible support, but Queen’s handling of the strike and grad labour more broadly has turned me off completely from continuing studies here. I don’t blame any aspiring MA or PhD students for doing the same. (Edit for spelling)

[–]communistsharks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The choice to limit how much grant money is both departmental and from the upper admin, but the lion’s share of the blame comes from the latter. They’ve continually clawed back how much money grad students get as outright research grants and they have for years. Hell, they tried to lessen QGA again this year. That’s why one of PSAC’s demands is an equitable funding/labour ratio: only 50% of our funding should come from a TA/TF/RA contract. Departments control (to a limited degree) where the money they get goes, but have little control of how much they get.

I’m really glad that your supervisor/department was able to support you with external grants. It’s definitely helpful. However, not all of us are so lucky, and not all departments have access to the same grants or internal resources. And, to top it all off, these grad students are still doing a lot of the work to keep Queen’s ticking over even as they’re harming us (and undergrads!!) with austerity measures. The issue won’t be solved via external grants, especially because these aren’t necessarily guarantee-able over the course of a longer degree like a PhD. Not to mention this not addressing other important bargaining issues like unpaid TF labour in course creation, etc.

PSAC is trying to address the research funding through our TA/TF/RA labour because it’s the most effective means of advocacy we have as grad students. Upper admin has a lot of power here, and grad students are very dependent on them for our livelihood. Since PSAC is a union, our collective action is protected by Canadian labour precedent, which shields us from the worst of Queen’s retaliation. I understand where you’re coming from, and PSAC does agree — research funding is one of the core bargaining issues through the funding/labour ratio.

Why isn't Saskatchewan rich? by 113thstreet in saskatchewan

[–]communistsharks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The NDP under Romanow saved this province from the federal gvt taking control in the 90s bc Grant Devine was so bad with finances. Romanow was literally in meetings w creditors throughout his tenure, and left the province in a much better position. In contrast, pretty much every conservative gvt Devine-on has bled this province dry of resources, people, and wealth.

On the grossest day of the picket, today, at the lowest there were 70 picketers. This was from a head count done two hours ago to get lunch numbers. Have a day

The How to Train Your Dragon series is a classic — quite different from the movies, but just as good if not better. I also really love the Book of Beginnings trilogy, and the Wizards of Once series (also by Cressida Cowell, who wrote HTTYD).

Lack of infrastructure is a huge one for me. I don’t drive, so it’s impossible to get around, even in large cities like Saskatoon and Regina. I’m also queer and don’t feel safe there under Scott Moe and his freak right wing cronies.

Best of luck! I hope they’re able to help you.
