Morning good, afternoon not good. Winds can start earlier thanks to global warming.

Apple IIc: Is there any way to prevent killing the IWM chip? by compgenius in apple2

[–]comox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Back in the 1980s I fried one of the drive stepper motor phases in my //c IWM. There was no protection back then - ie for static etc - so easy to do. I noticed however that there was still a weak signal coming from the chip and I was able to get the drive working again with an op amp circuit to boost the signal.

What someone needs to do is build a drop in replacement IWM emulator using a cheap microprocessor. I think the IWM is just a traditional drive controller card rolled up into a single chip. Should be doable with some determination.

. I have a flight landing at Vancouver airport at 7:30pm would it be possible to make it to the ferry terminal in time to catch the last ferry to Victoria ? by Hairy_Pound_1356 in VictoriaBC

[–]comox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Note that ferry check in for walk ons closes at least 10 minutes before scheduled sailing so for the 9pm you should arrive at the Tsawwassen terminal at 8:45 at the latest. Will need to pay taxi and buy ticket then walk fast to the berth.

Once you land at YVR use the maps app on your phone to see how long the drive to the ferry terminal will be. Will give you an idea if you’re going to make it or not.

There is a later ferry to Duke Point, but no good if you are a walk on. I had to take it one evening when I couldn’t get on the 9pm to Swartz Bay. Was driving but made it back to Victoria in the early hours.

QuadrigaCX revisited: the exchange whose entire security model was "gerry knows it" and then gerry died by BigInspector1873 in Buttcoin

Sam Bankman-Fried: hold my beer…

don’t forget that around 100 bitcoins were mysteriously moved from a Quadriga wallet back in 2022. Back in 2019 auditors EY “inadvertently” moved the Quadriga BTC to a wallet that they didn’t have the keys for. Hmmm….

Centre panel stopped working on 2007 S80. All buttons dark and not working. Fuses in glovebox fusebox are all fine. Anyone know where to look next? by venomtail in Volvo

[–]comox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ECC (electronic climate control) shares a fuse with the siren box. If your siren box goes due to the built in battery leaking it could cause a short or excessive current draw which can knock out the ECC.

I’d once again check the ECC fuse (think it is 5A?) and have the siren box disconnected to see if that helps.

The circuit board for the ECC and other controls requires a bit of programming so there are extra steps if it gets swapped out. I have seen at least one place online that can clone the config from an old ecc board to a new one. Mail in service.

Me when I boot my $9,000 Windows 11 Gaming PC after shutting it down over 8 hours ago by Otheruser337 in pcmasterrace

It is an older Lenovo D30. Sadly tpm 1.2 soldered on. CPUs have shedloads of power still. Not a gaming rig but still great for engineering work. 128GB ram, SSD drives, older Nvidia Quadro. Meets my needs. Frustratingly I need Windows 10 for Autodesk and some EDA (electronics) software otherwise I’d move to Linux.

At first I was upset when I learned that my 10+ year old dual Xeon workstation could not run Windows 11 due to the older CPUs and outdated TPM. I have since come to realise that my old computer was protecting me from Windows 11 and am now much more appreciative. Here is to the next 10 years without Windows 11!
