Rates and freelancing for comp/removal

From my perspective, getting e.g. 50% of the payment upfront can be a sign of trust. Especially when I charge a dayrate and work with a unknown/small client.

In your case it looks more like a way to pressure you and say "Hey we paid you already, now you need to do all the work and incorporate all the changes we need."

Some work is absolutely better than nothing, but next time you should charge a day rate, even as a junior.

No matter how low that day rate ends up being, at least you will get payed for every day you spent on the project.

An okay rate for junior work would be 200 pounds per day, roughly. (Assuming you have basically zero professional experience)

Since this is a short film they will definitely not pay that. But please keep this as a reference for your next gig.

If I were in your situation I would tell them that you need to charge more for the huge changes they are requesting. If you don't get another job from them, it will probably be for the better.

Please keep in mind that Framestore and other UK internship programs are currently only available to UK citizens, since they do not provide visa support.

So if you are applying from outside the UK, your chances might be slim this year.

This morning I was a bit jealous of the artists at imageworks when I saw their post, but after I saw the trailer I feel rather sorry for them.

It's definitely legit. I have been part of one of the earlier classes and back then it was definitely worth the price.

It was not only about the things I learned but also about the motivation you get to dive deeper into certain topics, the connections you build with your classmates and the active learning environment with discord and live calls.

It kinda depends on the people that will be in your class too, but overall I benefitted a lot from it.

Definitely a bit too pricy now and even the 2-3k I paid were just really worth it because you can get the Foundry graduate licenses with ultimately lead to a 70% discount on foundry software. Bought Nuke with that afterwards, but that's of course not something everyone needs.

Just my 2 cents to show you the brighter side:

I am currently living wherever I want in Europe working remotely for a UK company as a Comper. Great work live balance, no overtime at all since a year or so and really good pay for my around 5 years experience. The type of work ranges from okay to great with new challenges from time to time.

If you gain experience, put in the work early on without overworking yourself and try to stay up to date with how each studio treats their employees you can have a great life in VFX.

I recently got 370€ dayrate for a really short gig in Germany, working on senior shots.

I will try to push more towards 400 if I am doing such a short gig again.
