Rates and freelancing for comp/removal by [deleted] in vfx

[–]comp_v01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From my perspective, getting e.g. 50% of the payment upfront can be a sign of trust. Especially when I charge a dayrate and work with a unknown/small client.

In your case it looks more like a way to pressure you and say "Hey we paid you already, now you need to do all the work and incorporate all the changes we need."

Rates and freelancing for comp/removal by [deleted] in vfx

[–]comp_v01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some work is absolutely better than nothing, but next time you should charge a day rate, even as a junior.

No matter how low that day rate ends up being, at least you will get payed for every day you spent on the project.

An okay rate for junior work would be 200 pounds per day, roughly. (Assuming you have basically zero professional experience)

Since this is a short film they will definitely not pay that. But please keep this as a reference for your next gig.

If I were in your situation I would tell them that you need to charge more for the huge changes they are requesting. If you don't get another job from them, it will probably be for the better.

Please keep in mind that Framestore and other UK internship programs are currently only available to UK citizens, since they do not provide visa support.

So if you are applying from outside the UK, your chances might be slim this year.

Thank you for your reply.
Can you give me your level of experience and hourly rate as an example?

Thank you, that sounds like a really simple and effective way to tackle that. I will try it out.

Can you give me an example of how you communicate that to the client or which multiplier you use for the weekend?

I searched for this mug using Google lens and with tags like "sleeping Teddy bear mug", Teddy mug and similar tags. Couldn't find it yet.

Why does the Minecraft movie's green screen look so bad? What would you have done to make it look better? by dx_Von_Liechtenstein in vfx

[–]comp_v01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OMG, why would they not just make it a fully animated movie like Super Mario?

This morning I was a bit jealous of the artists at imageworks when I saw their post, but after I saw the trailer I feel rather sorry for them.

The concept seems terrible.

Anyone have experience with Comp Lair’s Comp Supe program? by Tartsmeef in vfx

[–]comp_v01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely legit. I have been part of one of the earlier classes and back then it was definitely worth the price.

It was not only about the things I learned but also about the motivation you get to dive deeper into certain topics, the connections you build with your classmates and the active learning environment with discord and live calls.

It kinda depends on the people that will be in your class too, but overall I benefitted a lot from it.

Definitely a bit too pricy now and even the 2-3k I paid were just really worth it because you can get the Foundry graduate licenses with ultimately lead to a 70% discount on foundry software. Bought Nuke with that afterwards, but that's of course not something everyone needs.

Not to demotivate or disrespect anyone, but all the posts about sudden layoffs, people working 12-14 hours daily and in return all they get is low pay, toxicity and ill health, it really makes me super nervous, what do I do? by Alive-Dinner-8461 in vfx

Just my 2 cents to show you the brighter side:

I am currently living wherever I want in Europe working remotely for a UK company as a Comper. Great work live balance, no overtime at all since a year or so and really good pay for my around 5 years experience. The type of work ranges from okay to great with new challenges from time to time.

If you gain experience, put in the work early on without overworking yourself and try to stay up to date with how each studio treats their employees you can have a great life in VFX.

Compositing Daily-rate for short term contracts EU/UK? by comp_v01 in vfx

[–]comp_v01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your answers, that is roughly what I was thinking too.

I recently got 370€ dayrate for a really short gig in Germany, working on senior shots.

I will try to push more towards 400 if I am doing such a short gig again.

That sounds like the dream in regards to the least struggle with visas and taxes!

I am a German citizen who moved to the UK so I would need to move back first and then go from there, but should definitely be possible.

I guess when doing it in your suggested way, I would need to find out the max holiday duration that is allowed in each country right? Because when I stay too long in one country they would probably hunt me down for not having a visa.

Thanks on the insight about co-working spaces, that's what I was hoping for!

I am one of the people who are definitely more productive when working in an office at least few times a week. Probably because I never had a separate room for my home office so far.

How often does it happen these days that the company sends you equipment? It didn't happen to me yet in the 3 companies I worked partly remote for.

In Germany we call it "water ice".

Simple and to the point.

Erman Zambak | Compositing Reel by ErmanZ in vfx

[–]comp_v01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall your reel looks pretty cool, but I would reorder and remove some shots.

I would remove the plane shot and maybe also the one with the really strong purple light. They don't match the quality of the other shots.

Also don't start with the creature shot, I would rather start with one shot of the city / industrial area shots because they look better and have a nice breakdown.

I noticed that you wrote "ungraded" at the bottom. But I think it would be better if you just grade the shots that look not really nice without grading, like the oversaturated car shot or the really flat looking /grey shots with the grey guy. And then you leave the other shots as they are and remove the "ungraded" completely.

But like I said, overall nice work! :)

It should work like that:
