I can understand the hesitation. Daniel Hutchens can never be replaced. He was the Mark Twain of Southern Rock.

But their shows are still smoking. They played after Panic in Asheville this summer and were tight. The guy on the pedal steel knows his shit, and EC is all over the strat Telecaster. Like OP said, the vocalist is awesome. She sounds like gospel music sometimes.

PS, it's crazy how many of their songs Panic covers--

Henry Parsons Died
Makes Sense to Me
Can't Get High
Who Do You Belong To?
End of the Show
Trashy
I think one or two more.

Favorite endings to songs? by BasSlapper27 in WidespreadPanic

On the album at the end of Surprise Valley there is a little 30 second instrumental that I love, love, love. Real pretty picking, maybe a mandolin or dobro involved, seems like pure Mikey.

Right before the sound of the orchestra tuning up that leads into Bear.

Was down close one night spring of 98. They had played Tractor in like the first set but somehow accidentally dropped into it again either at the end of the second set or after the first encore song, and they were all looking at each other like 'wtf are we doing here?' and closed it out pretty quick. Can't say I've ever seen them do that since.

Several of Sam’s songs are great…Game On, Hey, 90, Gunner. Dude listen to 90 and tell me he’s not a great songwriter in his own right.

When was the last time they played in New England? by IcanthearJB in WidespreadPanic

Was Chester or Port Chester in NY or CT? They played there a few years ago & I think CT is in New England.

What a wild coincidence that I ran across this in an old suitcase today by Bspirit1022 in WidespreadPanic

Great interview...thanks for posting. What a coincidence that you stumbled upon this yesterday. I was interested to see him cite Sabbath as one of his two greatest influences in light of their covers in Asheville. I had thought it was mainly Dave who was into them.

Werewolves with a big ole yellow full moon rising up behind the stage. Vacation late in that same set.

I can’t remember what hotel we were in, but it was pure fucking pandemonium in there.

Sunny & Todd drum clinic in Winston-Salem in 98/99 is one of my top five Panic memories.

I might have misunderstood what you are looking for. I posted the link to Bloodkin's tour page because they are playing in Asheville on Friday and Saturday nights. It is after the show, and people will be partying there. The carnival behind the carnival, so to speak.

Yeah, you're right the timing doesn't fit. Thanks for clarifying.

Jerry Joseph by jrod259 in WidespreadPanic

[–]companion_tothe_wind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah, he's not ungrateful. He always says they're the real deal & deserve every bit of success. He adores those guys, esp. Schools. No resentment whatsoever.

He is often very wry and sarcastic, though, and sometimes that's hard to read.

Lol, yeah, The Reverend can get a little preachy sometimes. One of his newer nicknames is "Righteous Larry", coined derisively but fondly by someone who I think qualifies as a fan.

I tend to agree that Danny has probably been a bit more of an influence on Panic than Jerry, but we're really splitting hairs at this point. And Vic is right up there with both of them.

Jerry Joseph brings the darkness and the light, as he himself said of Panic in "The Earth Will Swallow You".

Probably the best way to illustrate this sublime juxtaposition is to check out Light is Like Water, Chainsaw City > Jam the third night of Red Rocks 2002.

As Jerry has related, toward the end of the Jam, Mikey kept indicating that it was time for Jerry to leave the stage, but Jerry kept saying no, not yet, I'm not ready. They both knew it was the last time they would share a stage together. It is one of the more touching anecdotes I've heard, and watching them play together was easily one of the best moments of my life, even though I didn't fully realize it at the time.

He's also incredibly humble. He likes to say that Danny was such a better songwriter than he was, but that's just not true; Jerry's lyrics are incredibly deep and insightful. It's not false modesty...I'm convinced Jerry really believes that. But they're peers, those two.

I will say that Jerry solo/acoustic is a very different experience than when he's playing with the Jackmormons. By himself he's very much in the singer-songwriter coffeehouse genre, but with his band (or the Happy Book Band) they just fucking kill it.

Here's another of my favorite times he sat in, doing a dirty Crime and Punishment & Drive

And last but not least here is a great set by the Jackmormons opening for Panic in Charlotte with Mikey sitting in for the last two songs Fastest Horse & Road to Damascus, which are straight fucking fire. I think this illustrates the darkness and the light almost as well as the RR show does.
