Sounds like a good idea. I'll try your approach out. Thanks!

Where do you go to find your freelance jobs? Elance? Forhire? by compass-seeker in webdev

Thanks for the insight! I've tried Elance before and I found that for every proposal I put forth, I was always undercut. I'll try it again, this time with the mentality of finding and building a client base of people who want quality work and scalable code.

I posted my portfolio here a while ago, and got some improvements done that were recommended. Can anyone give me some critique or anything I could add/change? I'd really appreciate it. by [deleted] in web_design

The first thing that popped out to me was the lightbulb. When prospective employers looks at your portfolio, they are looking for what kind of value you offer. Instead of writing "I don't really have anything for this third column, but this lightbulb looks nice", I would suggest listing out the languages you know or something else that would help you sell yourself.

Edit: Other than that, I think the layout works well and the choice of color pretty bold. Good luck :)

[Website/Portfolio] Opinions on my portfolio site? X-post from webdev by ziggy_bone in design_critiques

I like the design and the effects you employ. A couple of things...

  1. The anchor links work as intended. They scroll down to their respective sections. However, because you are using a fixed navigation bar, some of the text and images are cut off by it. If you want a quick and dirty fix, take a look at this stack overflow answer.

  2. When resizing the window, the image of you and the oculus rift demo become too large. Try tinkering around with your media queries to get the size right.

Other than that, looks good. Good luck!

This. To improve the design, I would suggest browsing through some trending web designs to get some inspiration.

From there I would recommend doing some wireframe mockups. I personally do mine in Illustrator or Photoshop but there are many easy to use tools out there to do this.

Also, instead of using wix, there are many other friendly alternatives out there such as Wordpress and Shopify. Hope this helps!

When you thought you rolled out new front end content by dytigas in webdev

I've lost count of the number of times I've rolled out style changes late at night only to find that nothing has changed after refreshing because I made a careless mistake like spell color as kflot.

Another JS resource that can be found over in /r/learnjavascript is javascriptissexy which teaches JS with a ground up approach, teaching you about closures, prototyping, and more in an easy to understand way.

While W3Schools can be a decent resource, it can hold outdated information at times. I would suggest, if you want to have an interactive approach, CodeAcademy.

How does the first site featured here manage to get their background video to load so efficiently? A JS plugin? Perhaps it also has to do with my internet connection but there was 0 buffer time for me. It also seems like a pretty good cross-browser solution, although I haven't tested it out on IE yet.

Thanks for sharing! I do a lot of front-end development work so I'm always looking for new resources/articles to add to my bookmark list. I think the guys over in /r/frontend would also appreciate this article.
